Fans Spot a Major Mistake in House of the Dragon’s Opening Credits

The much-anticipated season 3 of House of the Dragon is here, bringing with it an all-new opening credits sequence. However, it seems that a significant blunder has been made, and eagle-eyed fans are not letting it slide!

What’s the Controversy?

In the new credits, around the 1 minute 31 seconds mark, viewers can spot a particularly bizarre depiction of a dragon. This isn’t just any dragon; it’s a four-legged, three-headed black dragon set against a striking red backdrop. As many fans know, this is based on the traditional Targaryen sigil familiar to both the books and the original Game of Thrones series.

George R.R. Martin’s Take

Here’s where it gets dicey: the legendary author George R.R. Martin has consistently stated that dragons in his works have only two legs. On social media, one fan expressed their frustration, saying, “George R.R. Martin has already said a thousand times that the dragons in his universe have only two legs.” Another chimed in with, “Absolute ragebait, this is incredible!”

“In my books, the Targaryen sigil has two legs, as it should. Why would any Westerosi ever put four legs on a dragon?” – George R.R. Martin

The Significance of the Design

Now, you might be wondering why the number of legs even matters. The three-headed dragon symbolizes Aegon the Conqueror alongside his two sister-queens, Visenya and Rhaenys, who united the Seven Kingdoms. Having fewer legs aids in balance and stability, which is crucial for flying. Martin has voiced his disapproval of the four-legged dragon in past writings and even pointed out that the original Game of Thrones depicted the sigil correctly for its initial seasons.

Why Stick to Four Legs?

So why does House of the Dragon persist with this error? It might be a matter of keeping things consistent with the earlier series. However, it’s clear that Martin isn’t a fan of this creative choice. He has even lamented that the erroneous design has made its way onto the covers of his books despite his protests.

On the bright side, the actual dragons featured in the series do have the correct two legs, so at least there’s that win for the fans! New episodes of House of the Dragon continue to be released weekly on HBO in the US and HBO Max, as well as Sky in the UK.
