Forget Dodge Rolls! Sword Sage: Awakening Unleashes Bruce Lee Style Combat

Salaam, gamers! If you’ve been keeping an eye on the gaming world lately, you’ll know that Chinese-developed action-RPGs are absolutely crushing it. With games like Black Myth: Wukong making massive waves and Phantom Blade Zero looking super promising, there’s a definite buzz in the air. Now, a new contender is stepping into the arena, and it’s bringing a completely fresh approach to combat that might just blow your minds: say hello to Sword Sage: Awakening!

This upcoming title from indie studio Sword Panda is a “sorta-Soulslike” that recently showed off its moves at a BiliBili Game First Look event in Shanghai. What makes it stand out? Well, get this: it completely ditches the trusty dodge roll. Yes, you heard that right! For all you Elden Ring and Sekiro veterans, prepare to unlearn everything you thought you knew about staying alive in a tough action-RPG.

No Dodge, No Parry – Just Pure Bruce Lee Power!

Instead of frantic rolling or a dedicated parry button, Sword Sage: Awakening draws its inspiration from the legendary Bruce Lee’s martial art, Jeet Kune Do. The core philosophy here is “intercepting the fist” – meaning the best time to strike an opponent is when they’re busy trying to hit you! It’s all about precise timing and reading your enemy.

Here’s how it works: in that split-second before an enemy attack lands, you need to hold your block button and flick the right thumbstick in the direction of their incoming strike. High attack? Stick up. Low attack? Stick down. Mid-section? Left or right. Nail that timing and direction, and you’ll pull off a powerful counter-attack, leaving your foe wide open for a devastating combo or a unique special move from your chosen sword. Of course, you can still just block, but be careful – your blade has durability, and if it shatters, you’ll have to switch to your secondary weapon while your primary one regenerates. So, mastering this “evade and counter” system isn’t just cool, it’s essential!

Familiar Soulslike Comforts (with a Desi Twist!)

While the combat is a game-changer, fans of FromSoftware titles will find some familiar elements. Sword Sage: Awakening features intricately designed levels that twist, turn, and loop back, letting you unlock shortcuts and create pathways to previous save points. Instead of bonfires, you’ll find cozy benches carved from tree stumps, where an adorable red panda will serve you tea to restore your health and help you craft buffs – how wholesome is that?

Expect those classic Soulslike ambushes too – turning a corner only to be lunged at by an unseen foe, or stumbling upon an intimidating, optional boss who just *knows* he’s about to hand you a beating. But it’s not all grim! The world also feels alive with charming surprises like treasure chests that require environmental puzzles to unlock, and even rival enemy factions duking it out amongst themselves, offering you a chance to either sneak by or jump in for some easy loot.

A Challenge for Everyone

Make no mistake, Sword Sage: Awakening is tough. Boss fights, in particular, will test your mastery of the evade and counter system. Initially, some prompts for unblockable attacks were in Chinese symbols, which definitely added to the challenge, but the developers have confirmed they’ll be offering basic arrows in the final game – phew!

However, what’s truly awesome is Sword Panda’s approach to accessibility. Unlike some games that demand you “get good or get lost,” Sword Sage: Awakening offers a helping hand. If you die three times, the game gives you two optional talismans: one that lets you evade and counter regardless of the stick direction, and another that automatically counters when you just hold the block button. These aren’t permanent and can be swapped out, so you can dial the challenge up or down as you feel ready. This means more players can experience the game’s exhilarating, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”-style combat choreography without hitting a frustrating wall – and we absolutely love that!

There’s still a lot to learn about Sword Sage: Awakening, including weapon mods and magical powers. The campaign is expected to be around 15 hours long, and while there’s no release date yet (development is about 60% complete), we’re told it’s likely arriving sometime next year. Based on this early look, it’s definitely one action-RPG we won’t be side-stepping!
