Fumito Ueda Talks AI Use in Game Development: A Human-Centric Approach

In a recent chat with PC Gamer, the legendary game director Fumito Ueda, known for classics like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, shared some insights about his studio, GenDesign, and their upcoming title, Gen Atlas. While many developers are diving into the world of generative AI, Ueda confirmed that his team is steering clear of using it for the actual game development process.

Ueda mentioned that GenDesign does utilize AI, but not in the way you might expect. They employ it as a tool for project management—helping them organize schedules, summarize meeting notes, and even get the hang of new software. However, he was clear: “Everything that is considered game development is made by humans.” This approach underscores their commitment to preserving the creative touch that defines their games.

The discussion around AI in gaming is heating up, with many developers harnessing its capabilities for various tasks. While some studios are using AI for ideation, localization, or even creating assets like concept art, others—like GenDesign—are taking a more traditional route. Ueda’s stance highlights how important it is for fans to know the creative origins of the games they love.

Interestingly, platforms like Steam have instituted guidelines requiring developers to disclose any use of generative AI in their games, particularly for controversial applications. The Epic Games Store, where Gen Atlas will launch, does not have such requirements, and Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, has expressed skepticism about the necessity of these disclosures.

Despite the lack of formal requirements on some platforms, there’s a growing interest among players regarding how AI is integrated into their favorite titles. Many gamers now routinely check Steam pages for disclosures, especially after news breaks about AI involvement in popular projects like the upcoming Crazy Taxi remake. This trend suggests that fans are keen to understand the balance between human creativity and automated assistance in the games they cherish.
