Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford Clarifies No-AI Stance After Controversial Post

Randy Pitchford, the head honcho at Gearbox, is stirring up quite the conversation on social media lately. After sharing an AI-generated image over the weekend, he found himself defending the studio’s stance on artificial intelligence. The post didn’t go over so well, and Pitchford has been vocal about the fact that Gearbox doesn’t use generative AI in any of its professional work.

The whole saga kicked off when he tweeted on May 3, saying, “I asked my primary AI tool to generate a selfie that reflects its feelings based on my interactions with it.” The selfie, however, came with some random background text that Pitchford claimed had no relation to reality, which only added fuel to the fire.

When a follower suggested that a genuine photo of Pitchford in his office would have been better received, he shot back, explaining that the point was about the absurdity of AI having an identity. “In what universe does your suggestion relate to my point?” he quipped, showing little patience for the critique.

But it didn’t stop there. Fans started voicing their worries about the potential use of AI in future Borderlands games, especially following a patch note update that some speculated might have been influenced by AI. Pitchford was quick to dismiss those claims, attributing any errors in the notes to human mistakes.

Eventually, Pitchford elaborated on his original tweet, saying he was inspired by friends who were having fun creating AI images of themselves. He admitted to being curious about what kind of crazy output an AI might generate regarding self-identity, labeling the result as embarrassingly funny and wanting to share it with his followers.

He reiterated that Gearbox’s policy is strictly against using AI in any capacity that could be seen by customers, clarifying that his use of AI was entirely personal. “I don’t use AI for work, and my work computers are separate from personal devices,” he explained, emphasizing that the content came from publicly available knowledge about Gearbox.

In a bid to cool things down, Pitchford encouraged fans to “maybe relax a little and have some fun.” It’s clear he wasn’t trying to make a serious statement about AI in gaming, but the backlash highlights just how sensitive the topic is within the gaming community. While some industry players may champion the use of AI, many gamers are understandably wary.

In the end, it seems like Pitchford was simply having a laugh, but in an industry where the implications of AI are heavily debated, it’s no surprise that his casual approach sparked such a strong reaction from fans.
