How a $50 Million Gamble Transformed Borderlands Into a Classic

Can you imagine Borderlands without its iconic inked visuals and quirky characters? Hard to believe, right? But when the game was first teased nearly 20 years ago, it had a much darker and muted aesthetic—definitely not the vibrant chaos we know today. Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, recently shared some juicy insights during a chat with podcaster David Senra. He revealed that bringing the game’s art style to life required a whopping $50 million and an extra year of development time!

Back in those days, Take-Two hadn’t fully turned the company around yet, and resources were pretty tight. They were in the final stages of development just two months before the intended release, and Zelnick mentioned they had already sunk a lot of cash into it. Then the head of the division strolled into his office with a bold declaration: “We don’t think this is good enough. We messed up on the art style, and it doesn’t stand out. We need to remake the game.” Talk about a big leap of faith!

Despite the hefty financial risk, Zelnick did his homework and decided to back this transformative choice, even though he admitted that it was a risky move that most in the industry wouldn’t have dared to make. It’s fascinating to think about the $50 million figure considering that Borderlands 2 reportedly had a budget of around $35 million, according to Randy Pitchford.

It makes you wonder how that original, darker version of Borderlands would have played out. While I personally enjoyed the classic beige vibes of games like Quake and Gears of War, it seems the team knew what they were doing by steering away from a generic look. Early testers pointed out that the game resembled id Software’s Rage or Fallout 3 a bit too much. And let’s be honest, looking back, those muddy brown shooters don’t hold a candle to the unique style Borderlands has carved out for itself.

So, here’s to bold decisions and artistic visions that reshape the gaming landscape! Borderlands may have taken a hit in the wallet, but it paid off in style and success.
