Meet NEO: The Quirky Robot That Could Make Us All Obsolete

Ever felt like you’re not needed anymore? Well, brace yourself, because a new robot named NEO is here to take over some of our favorite tasks and, honestly, it’s a little eerie. This little gadget isn’t just doing chores; it can also handle an Xbox controller, pop open a bag of snacks, and even—awkwardly—remove clothing. Talk about a future that’s both exciting and bizarre!

Developed by 1X Technologies in Palo Alto, NEO boasts some impressively crafted hands, designed to tackle a range of household tasks. In a recent video, you can catch it doing everything from swirling imaginary wine in a glass to changing light bulbs—before smashing them with a hammer, of course. It’s also seen lifting weights (briefly), meticulously picking up a screw, and even connecting non-Lego blocks. But it doesn’t stop there; NEO can clumsily unzip a hoodie and, in a strange twist, open a bag of Funyuns while being attacked by a human wielding a hammer. Why? We may never know.

Now, don’t get me wrong; the potential for a robot like NEO could be life-altering for those who need help around the house, especially the elderly or disabled. However, it’s hard to overlook the oddities of this device. For starters, anyone wearing a white sweater and gloves inside your home raises some serious red flags. Seriously, it looks like something out of a horror flick!

And let’s not even talk about its face—those pitch-black eyes on a featureless head can send shivers down your spine. Just imagine it staring at you while you’re trying to have a chill gaming session. Plus, the video is loaded with questionable demos. Like, why is it getting hammered on by a human? Wouldn’t it be more impressive to see NEO zip up a hoodie instead of awkwardly unzipping it? And the fact that it’s learning to use an Xbox controller? Are we really outsourcing our gaming to robots now?

Here’s a little twist, though: it turns out that NEO isn’t entirely autonomous just yet. Most of its actions are controlled remotely by a human wearing VR gear. So, while it appears to be functioning on its own, there’s a person behind the scenes operating it—probably some intern in their 20s wondering what they signed up for.

In the end, the $20,000 robot designed to replace us requires another person to run it. Seems like keeping us around isn’t such a bad idea after all! I mean, I just need a subscription to HBO a couple of times a year to keep me entertained, while NEO demands a hefty price tag. So for now, rest easy; you might just be safe from robot overlords for a little while longer!
