MGS3 Players! Did You Play with a ‘Broken’ Camera for 15 Years?!

Ever thought you knew your favorite games inside out? Well, get ready for a surprise, especially if you’re a die-hard fan of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater! It turns out, for over a decade, many of us have been experiencing the game’s iconic cutscenes with a subtle, yet significant, visual flaw.

A dedicated modder, Afevis Solmunko, who is the mastermind behind the popular MGSHDFix, has dropped a bombshell. He’s discovered and fixed a camera misalignment issue in MGS3 that has been present in both the 2011 HD Collection and the more recent 2023 Master Collection. And get this – the bug has been there since 2011, meaning players have been seeing a slightly “off” view for 15 whole years!

So, what’s the big deal? Solmunko explains that in *all* of MGS3’s cutscenes within these collections, the camera was positioned about 10% higher than it was in the original PlayStation 2 version. This might sound minor, but it effectively cut off the bottom part of the screen, subtly altering the carefully crafted cinematic framing Hideo Kojima and his team intended. Imagine watching a movie where the bottom edge is always slightly cropped – not ideal for a game renowned for its storytelling and visual flair!

To put it into perspective, example images shared by Metal Gear enthusiast Heitais clearly show the difference. What might have gone unnoticed by many (including some of us here at PakGamersHub!) suddenly becomes glaringly obvious once you see the corrected version. It’s not necessarily game-breaking, but it certainly impacts the overall visual experience in a title that prides itself on its cinematic presentation.

But the revelations don’t stop there! Solmunko has also found a similar issue in Metal Gear Solid 2. In that game, while they aligned the bottom edge of the frame, more “headroom” was added. The unexpected side effect? Players could sometimes catch glimpses of things like Ocelot seemingly “teleporting” or characters loading into scenes – moments that were clearly not meant for player eyes! The modder is currently considering fixing this MGS2 anomaly as well, which would be another huge win for fans.

It just goes to show you, even in beloved classics, there might be hidden quirks waiting to be uncovered. Hats off to Afevis Solmunko and the modding community for their relentless dedication to preserving and perfecting these gaming masterpieces!
