Micron CEO Predicts RAM Shortage Will Haunt Us Until 2027
In a recent update from Micron, a leading name in memory manufacturing, the CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, shared some news that might not sit well with gamers. He stated that the current RAM shortage is expected to drag on until at least 2027. This projection comes straight from Micron’s Q3 2026 earnings report, highlighting the relentless demand in the semiconductor sector that shows no signs of slowing down.
Mehrotra emphasized that the surge in demand, particularly driven by artificial intelligence applications, combined with ongoing supply issues, means we’re in for a tough ride. “We foresee tight conditions lasting beyond 2027 because of AI-related needs across all sectors and persistent supply constraints,” he commented.
Over the past few years, the price tags on semiconductors, which include crucial components like RAM and VRAM used in graphics cards and SSDs, have soared. This spike is largely due to the massive demand from AI data centers. Micron itself shifted gears last year, stepping out of the consumer market and pulling the plug on its popular Crucial brand that many of us relied on for SSDs and RAM in our gaming rigs. Instead, they’re now fully invested in the lucrative data center business.
This pivot means that the costs for essential gaming components have skyrocketed. Whether you’re looking at RAM sticks or entire systems like the PS5, Xbox Series X, or even gaming PCs, prices have been climbing steadily. For instance, the Steam Machine, which was initially set to launch at around $750 (approx. Rs 208,500), ended up hitting shelves at a whopping $1,050 (approx. Rs 291,900) due to the high costs of its components.
Unfortunately, Mehrotra’s comments suggest that the so-called “RAMpocalypse” isn’t going away anytime soon. We can expect elevated prices for hardware to persist. “While we anticipate some improvement in industry supply by 2028, it’s tough to predict when memory supply will finally meet the rising demand,” he added.
This situation raises concerns for future gaming consoles like the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix, leaving us wondering if they’ll ever launch at a price point that won’t break our wallets. Only time will tell, but the outlook isn’t looking too rosy for budget-conscious gamers.
