Microsoft Activision Saga: Finally Over! Big Bucks Deal Gets a Small Settlement

Gamers, there’s a big update from the corporate side of the gaming world! Microsoft, the giants behind Xbox, have officially put an end to a lengthy legal battle surrounding their massive $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. After years of back-and-forth, a $250 million settlement has finally closed this chapter.

Remember when Microsoft dropped a staggering $69 billion to buy Activision Blizzard back in 2022? It was one of the biggest deals in gaming history, bringing iconic franchises like Call of Duty, Warcraft, and Candy Crush under the Xbox umbrella. But not everyone was happy about how things went down.

The core of the issue was a lawsuit filed by a Swedish pension fund, Sjunde AP-Fonden (AP7), alleging that Activision sold out too quickly and, frankly, too cheaply. Their main argument? That former Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick, rushed the sale. The pension fund claimed Kotick was trying to avoid the fallout from serious reports of misconduct within the company and, let’s be honest, secure his own hefty payout from the deal before things got worse for him.

The drama didn’t stop there! Kotick himself filed a countersuit, suggesting that AP7’s actions were actually aimed at helping another Swedish gaming company, Embracer, gain a stronger foothold in the California market at Activision’s expense. Embracer, while “humbled” by the claim, denied it, stating they didn’t need any help competing. Talk about a tangled web!

But that’s all ancient history now. With this new $250 million settlement, all those lawsuits, including Kotick’s countersuit and Microsoft’s own legal skirmishes, have been dropped. It’s a clean slate.

Now, $250 million sounds like an insane amount of money, and it absolutely is for us normal folks. However, when you compare it to the original $69 billion Microsoft paid for Activision Blizzard, it’s barely a blip on the radar. We’re talking less than half a percent of the total acquisition cost – basically, chillar (loose change) for a company the size of Microsoft. For them, it’s like finding a few extra rupees in an old jacket pocket after buying a brand-new gaming rig.

So, it seems Microsoft is more than happy to pay this “small price” to finally put this whole saga behind them. The Activision Blizzard acquisition, which was already approved by regulators worldwide, can now truly move forward without any lingering legal shadows. What do you think about this settlement?
