Microsoft’s Upcoming Xbox Elite 3 Controller Leaked: What We Know So Far

Today, some intriguing images of two new Xbox controllers have surfaced, thanks to Brazilian tech site Tecnoblog, which claims to have obtained them from Brazil’s telecom regulator. One of these controllers is a compact gamepad aimed at cloud gaming, reminiscent of third-party options from brands like 8bitDo. The other is set to be the successor to the Xbox Elite Controller 2, and fans have been eagerly awaiting this update since the last version dropped back in 2019.

The gaming controller arena has dramatically shifted in recent years, with numerous third-party gamepads now offering pro-style features—such as rear paddle buttons, swappable D-pads, and interchangeable sticks—at much lower prices. For instance, the Gamesir G7 Pro, which boasts several advanced features, retails for around $80, significantly cheaper than the Elite Series 2’s hefty price tag of $180. So, the big question is: what unique features will Microsoft bring to the table with this new controller?

While Microsoft hasn’t officially announced the controller, the leaked images hint at some interesting elements. One standout feature appears to be two scroll wheels located near the headphone jack. Tecnoblog speculates these might cater to flight simulation games, but that seems quite niche. It raises questions about how such features would translate to more popular genres like first-person shooters.

From what we can gather, the Elite 3 will maintain some beloved features from its predecessor, like interchangeable rear paddles and swappable sticks. There’s also a new button just below the Xbox button that lets users switch between local and cloud modes, connecting seamlessly to Xbox Cloud Gaming services. And yes, it has a rechargeable and replaceable battery, although it seems to have been downsized a bit.

Yet, one major concern still hangs in the air: will this controller come with drift-free Hall Effect technology in the analog sticks? This would address the dreaded stick drift issue that has plagued many players over the years. Alternatively, they could opt for Tunnel Magnetoresistance (TMR) sticks, which also promise to be drift-free but with slightly improved accuracy. Let’s be real, if Microsoft skips on these tech advancements, many gamers might think twice before shelling out for this controller.

To be honest, I’m feeling a bit underwhelmed by the Elite 3’s design. Why would I choose this over something like the Steam Controller, which features those highly underrated trackpads? The Steam Controller also incorporates TMR sticks, and while it offers fewer rear paddle buttons, I’d argue that the trackpads are a more significant innovation.

As for the smaller controller, it seems pretty standard—packed with all the essential features but lacking any of the pro enhancements. It’s lightweight and portable, perfect for gamers on the go, and includes that new toggle button we mentioned earlier.

When can we expect Microsoft to make an official announcement? While they haven’t dropped any hints yet, many speculate that we might get more info during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, which is part of the Summer Game Fest 2026. Keep an eye out for it!
