NFL 2K and MLB 2K: The Dreams That Never Took Off
If you were dreaming about the return of 2K’s NFL or MLB titles, it might be time to wake up. In a recent chat, Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, dashed any hopes for these iconic franchises making a comeback. When asked about the status of the NFL game, he shared that they had high hopes, but things just didn’t work out creatively.
“What we hoped would come to fruition creatively did not,” Zelnick explained. It appears that the studio struggled to craft a game that would stand out in the current gaming landscape, rather than facing issues with the NFL itself.
The last we saw from the NFL 2K series was back in 2004 with the critically acclaimed ESPN NFL 2K5. After that, EA Sports locked in an exclusive deal with the NFL, cementing Madden as the dominant name in football gaming.
When the conversation turned to the MLB series, Zelnick wasn’t optimistic either. “Probably not,” he stated bluntly. He reflected on the turbulent history with MLB, admitting that the company lost a significant amount of money during that time. “And I don’t like losing money,” he added, reinforcing his stance on not revisiting that franchise.
The MLB deal lasted from 2006 to 2012 and ultimately stifled competition, even putting EA’s MVP Baseball out of business. However, 2K’s MLB series suffered from financial losses and poor reviews, leading to its cancellation in 2014 after the last title, MLB 2K13.
While Zelnick seems to have moved on from baseball, he hinted that the idea of an NFL game could still be on the table if the right opportunity comes along. The vision for a potential NFL title was to be more arcade-like, especially since EA holds the reins on football simulation games. What exactly 2K was planning to make it unique remains a mystery, but it could have resembled the over-the-top style of MLB: The Bigs.
So, for now, it looks like fans of 2K’s sports franchises will have to keep their excitement in check and look elsewhere for their gaming thrills.
