Nolan Defends Epic Cinema Against Damon’s Doubts

Christopher Nolan has come out swinging in defense of epic films, responding to Matt Damon’s skepticism about the audience’s appetite for grand narratives like The Odyssey. Damon expressed concerns that the film might be a missed opportunity, calling it “the last chance” for such a project. However, Nolan isn’t having any of that defeatist attitude.

In a recent conversation, Nolan pointed out that movies like Backrooms and Obsession are shining examples that younger viewers are indeed ready to engage with lengthy, complex storytelling. He emphasized, “I get where Matt is coming from. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a film that takes us on a grand journey with a massive cast, but that doesn’t mean it’s a lost cause.”

He continued, “There’s a certain defeatist mindset in thinking that way, and I completely disagree. Cinema is dynamic and constantly evolving.” Nolan also mentioned notable new filmmakers like Curry Barker and Kane Parsons, highlighting how they’re pushing the industry forward with fresh perspectives that resonate with younger audiences.

The success of Backrooms, which raked in an impressive $360 (approx. Rs 100,080) million globally from a mere $10 (approx. Rs 2,780) million budget, along with Obsession’s jaw-dropping $406 (approx. Rs 112,870) million against a budget of less than $1 (approx. Rs 280) million, proves that the hunger for unique cinema is alive and well. “I’ve never bought into the myth that young people lack the attention span for something like a three-hour Greek epic. These films are rich and thought-provoking—just look at how experimental Backrooms can be, reminiscent of David Lynch’s most enigmatic work,” Nolan added.

The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer’s classic tale, stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, chronicling his perilous journey to return home after the Trojan War. With a runtime of 2 hours and 52 minutes, it’s set to hit theaters on July 17. As we gear up for this epic release, fans can also check out upcoming films scheduled for 2026 and beyond.
