Persona Live-Action Series on Netflix: Can It Capture the Magic?

It looks like the beloved Atlus RPG series Persona is set to make its way to Netflix in a live-action format. According to recent reports, the production team behind the hit series Stranger Things, 21 Laps, will be heavily involved, alongside Story Kitchen, a company known for transforming games into films, with titles like Sonic The Hedgehog under its belt. They’re also working on some exciting upcoming projects like Tomb Raider and It Takes Two.

Christopher Monfette, the writer and showrunner, is no stranger to the genre, having worked on various notable projects including the upcoming Disney series VisionQuest and Star Trek: Picard. Adding some gaming pedigree to the mix, Sega’s Toru Nakahara, who produced the Sonic film trilogy, is also on board as one of the executive producers.

Honestly, it’s surprising that it has taken this long for a live-action adaptation of Persona to come about. Persona 5 has been a monumental hit, with total sales exceeding 10.46 million copies by August 2025. The game, which debuted in 2016, has been released on multiple console generations and has led to several spin-offs, such as Persona 5 Strikers and Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth. The success of the series even spurred remakes of the earlier titles, Persona 3 and Persona 4.

Over the years, there have been various adaptations of Persona, including anime series for Persona 5 and Persona 4, and a miniseries for Persona 3. Moreover, the broader Shin Megami Tensei series has roots in novel trilogies, showcasing its rich storytelling history. However, this upcoming project marks the first live-action series for the franchise, which raises some concerns given the predominantly American production team.

There’s a lot of skepticism about how the series will be executed, especially when it comes to casting and setting. Will they stick to a Japanese cast and setting, or will we see a more Westernized approach? The transition from an anime-inspired universe to live-action will require careful handling to maintain the series’ original tone. Or, on the flip side, they could go for a comedic route and cast someone like Jack Black to lead the show!

Fans are also buzzing about the future of the franchise, especially with the recent announcement of Persona 6 at the Xbox Games Showcase. While details like gameplay footage and a release date are still under wraps, Atlus has confirmed that they do plan to release it someday. So, while we wait for more news on both the live-action series and the next installment in the game series, let’s keep our fingers crossed for something truly special!
