Phantom Blade: Zero Devs Focus on Quality, Not Competition with GTA 6
September 2026 is shaping up to be a wild month for gamers, with tons of titles vying for attention right before the colossal Grand Theft Auto 6 takes the spotlight. Many developers are likely to rethink their launch schedules to avoid being overshadowed, but the team behind Phantom Blade: Zero is taking a different route.
During last week’s Sony State of Play, the action RPG made headlines as it moved closer to its release date. Game director Qiwei “Soulframe” Liang made it clear that concerns about GTA 6 had zero impact on their launch timing. “Some folks might think we have some grand marketing strategy to dodge the crowded September, but that’s not the case,” Liang revealed. “Our main focus is on the quality of the game itself rather than worrying about what others are doing.”
With Phantom Blade: Zero now set to release on October 29, just three weeks ahead of Rockstar’s much-anticipated title, one has to wonder if the developers are feeling the pressure. However, Liang remains unfazed. When asked if launching in proximity to GTA might be intimidating, he said, “Honestly, we don’t even think about the competition or what’s launching around us. The only thing that matters is polishing our game. If we have an extra month, we can fix more bugs and enhance the experience, all while avoiding a massive day one patch.”
Interestingly, while Liang might not be sweating over GTA, he’s keeping a close eye on the growing hardware challenges faced by many gamers. His team is determined to ensure that Phantom Blade: Zero runs smoothly on devices like the Steam Deck, which is no small feat given the game is built on Unreal Engine 5. “We want our game to be accessible to as many players as possible without sacrificing quality,” Liang emphasized. “With hardware costs rising and gamers potentially delaying upgrades, it’s crucial for us to maintain performance across various platforms.”
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, it’s refreshing to see a team so dedicated to their craft, prioritizing the player experience above all else. With Phantom Blade: Zero, it seems the developers are ready to deliver a polished and captivating adventure, regardless of what else is happening in the gaming world.
