Pope Leo XIV to AI Giants: Pump the Brakes, Prioritize Humanity!

Salaam, PakGamers! The world of tech is always buzzing, but sometimes, even the biggest names step in to drop some serious wisdom. This time, it’s none other than Pope Leo XIV, who recently shook things up by issuing his first major letter, aptly titled ‘Magnifica Humanitas’ – which basically means ‘magnificent humanity’. And let us tell you, his message for the AI industry is loud and clear: Chill out with the race for power and profit, and put humans first!

Since taking office in 2025, Pope Leo XIV has been keeping a close eye on the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence. In ‘Magnifica Humanitas’, he’s calling for a serious pause, urging everyone involved to focus on “safeguarding the human person in the time of artificial intelligence.” He’s not holding back, repeatedly calling out the “culture of power” that’s pushing for deregulation, saying it’s turning tech into a free-for-all.

“Technology is never neutral,” the Pope writes, explaining that it always picks up the vibe and agenda of those who create it, fund it, regulate it, and use it. Basically, it’s not just code; it’s a reflection of human intentions. He’s pushing for more AI regulation and wants the industry to work for the greater good, not just for “idolatry of profit that sacrifices the weak.” Talk about a reality check for the big tech players!

This isn’t the first time Pope Leo XIV has voiced his concerns about AI messing with people’s livelihoods. Back in January, he warned that all the “AI-generated slop” could actually dismantle human creative industries, turning us all into “passive consumers of unthought thoughts and anonymous products without ownership or love.” For gamers and creators in Pakistan, this hits home – we value originality and passion!

It’s interesting to note that Pope Leo XIV chose his name as a nod to a predecessor who led the church during the Industrial Revolution, drawing a clear parallel between that era’s massive changes and today’s AI boom. He even signed this letter on the 135th anniversary of ‘Rerum novarum’, another open letter from way back, pushing for better conditions for workers. History repeating itself, anyone?

The letter also specifically criticizes using AI in remote warfare. Pope Leo XIV fears that while AI can help protect civilians, it can also make it easier to start conflicts, let people off the hook for their actions, and turn enemies into mere statistics, with victims becoming “collateral damage.” That’s a grim thought, isn’t it?

And when it comes to AI morality and “alignment,” the Pope has a strong take. He believes that without proper oversight, those controlling AI will just impose their own moral views, which will become the “invisible infrastructure” of these systems. He stresses that “a more moral AI is not enough if that morality is determined by a few.” Basically, we can’t just leave our ethical future in the hands of a select few tech gurus.

Finally, ‘Magnifica Humanitas’ also dives into the hot topic of AI “consciousness.” The Pope warns us not to get fooled by AI that can produce smart-sounding text. Just because an LLM (Large Language Model) can mimic human writing, doesn’t mean it has wisdom or understanding. He clearly states that AI doesn’t experience joy, pain, relationships, or truly understand love, work, friendship, or responsibility. It lacks a moral conscience and can’t truly judge good from evil.

“They may imitate language, behavior and analytical skills, or even simulate empathy and understanding, but they do not understand what they produce, for they lack the affective, relational and spiritual perspective through which human beings grow in wisdom,” he writes. So, while AI might act smart, it’s not actually ‘aware’ or ‘conscious’ in the human sense. Food for thought, especially for those of us who spend hours interacting with AI in games!

What do you guys think? Is Pope Leo XIV right to call for a slowdown and a more human-centric approach to AI? Let us know your thoughts!
