RPCS3 Emulator Takes a Stand Against AI-Generated Contributions

In the ever-evolving landscape of gaming development, open-source teams are grappling with a surge of AI-generated contributions, and the popular PS3 emulator, RPCS3, is no exception. The RPCS3 team recently took to social media to address the influx of AI-created pull requests (PRs) that have started flooding their project, and their message was clear: enough is enough!

In a bold post on X, the developers expressed their frustration, urging contributors to stop submitting what they termed “AI slop” code. They warned that those who continue to send these low-quality submissions without proper disclosure risk facing bans from the project. The team emphasized the importance of genuine coding skills, stating, “There are plenty of resources online to learn how to debug and code instead of generating slop that you don’t understand and that doesn’t work.”

The RPCS3 developers noted that the majority of these problematic AI-generated PRs were particularly affecting their macOS build, which a significant portion of the team does not regularly use. One dedicated member handles most of the testing for the emulator on Apple systems, but the team has had to roll back several AI submissions that led to major issues. “We have had to revert a few slop PRs that caused big regressions a few times,” they mentioned, clearly exasperated with the situation.

Responding to criticism and comments from AI supporters, the RPCS3 team clarified that while they are not against the use of AI in coding altogether, the problem lies in undisclosed submissions. “We won’t ban if disclosed, except for abuse cases,” they explained. They noted that genuine programmers who understand the intricacies of their work typically write their code without relying solely on AI, using it instead as a tool for automating repetitive tasks.

As a result, RPCS3 has laid down some clear guidelines regarding AI-generated code on their GitHub page. They permit the use of AI tools for research and reverse engineering but expect all contributors to fully comprehend and take ownership of their submissions. Furthermore, all communications with the team—be it code, comments, or queries—must come from human contributors, not AI agents acting independently.

In closing their message, the RPCS3 team firmly stated, “As for all the AI bros seething on our socials, we’re simply blocking you. Learn how to debug, code, and leave behind something useful to humanity when you’re gone, instead of peddling slop.” This strong stance reflects their commitment to maintaining high standards within their community, ensuring that contributions are both meaningful and effective.
