Shocking Layoffs Hit Build a Rocket Boy Again: What’s Going On?

Build a Rocket Boy, the studio behind the troubled MindsEye, has reportedly faced another wave of layoffs, marking a tough chapter for them. This news comes as they endure their third round of job cuts in just a year, with various sources indicating that around 170 employees have been let go, leaving the studio with around 80 staff members.

While the studio hasn’t officially commented on the situation yet, several former employees have taken to LinkedIn to announce their layoffs. Notable individuals such as senior game designer James Tyler and audio designer Tom Cross are among those who shared the unfortunate news, along with members of the community team, who confirmed their exits in the MindsEye Discord channel.

The troubles for Build a Rocket Boy began shortly after the launch of MindsEye in June 2025, when the studio experienced significant layoffs a month later. In response to the extensive job losses, employees banded together to pen an open letter to management, expressing their concerns and calling for change. They highlighted that MindsEye had suffered from “one of the worst video game launches this decade.”

Fast forward to March of this year, and more layoffs followed, further complicating the studio’s recovery efforts. Now, just as they released a new mission titled ‘Blacklisted’ via their user-generated content platform, Arcadia, it appears the challenges continue. This update was intended to signal a fresh start for the game, with claims of prior sabotage by the management leading up to its rocky launch.

As of now, player numbers are dismal, with only six players reported on Steam, indicating a long road ahead for Build a Rocket Boy and MindsEye. The situation is certainly concerning for fans and the gaming community at large as they watch this saga unfold. Keep an eye out for further updates on this developing story!
