When it comes to speedy platformers featuring Sega’s iconic blue hedgehog, Sonic Team’s Takahashi Iizuka has a clear favorite: Sonic Adventure 2. Having dedicated three decades to the Sonic franchise, Iizuka has worked on numerous titles, but there’s something special about this particular game that resonates with him.

In a candid chat with a gaming magazine, Iizuka shared, “While I cherish all the Sonic games I’ve worked on, Sonic Adventure 2 from 2001 holds a unique place in my heart.” He reminisced about the development process, noting that after the previous game, Sonic Adventure, he took a small team to San Francisco to kickstart the project. What started as a large-scale endeavor with over 100 people transitioned to a more intimate setting with just 11 developers.

Though it might sound challenging to create a game with such a small team, Iizuka pointed out the perks of this arrangement. “We were free to collaborate closely and support each other, both in our work and personally,” he recalled. This positive atmosphere, according to him, played a significant role in enhancing the quality of the game, proving that a supportive environment can lead to great results.

Sonic Adventure 2 has since become a beloved installment among fans and has even inspired a wave of indie games paying tribute to its legacy. Its impact is so profound that it has directly influenced the storyline of the recent Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, which left Iizuka feeling “really delighted.” It’s always exciting to see how the past shapes the present, especially with a character as enduring as Sonic.

For those looking to relive the adventures of Sonic and friends, Sonic Adventure 2 is readily available on PC and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility, making it easy for both new and veteran players to enjoy. As for remakes, Iizuka expressed a desire to see every Sonic title reimagined, though he acknowledged that doing so would require as much effort as creating an entirely new game.

The Sonic community holds its breath as they await Sega’s next move, especially with whispers of a new alternate-reality game on the horizon. Whatever comes next, it’s clear that Sonic Adventure 2 will always remain a shining jewel in the franchise’s crown.
