Sony Targets ‘Shovelware’: Webnetic to Bid Farewell to PlayStation Store
Looks like Sony is ramping up its efforts to clean up the PlayStation Store, and the next casualty in its crusade against ‘shovelware’ is publisher Webnetic. This publisher recently announced that their “journey on PlayStation” is about to come to a close, sparking discussions among gamers.
For those unfamiliar, ‘shovelware’ refers to low-quality games that flood online stores, often seen as quick cash-grabs with little effort put into them. Over the past few months, Sony has been on a mission to declutter its digital marketplace, and they’ve had quite the success rate. Earlier this year, they removed numerous titles from ThiGames, and then turned their attention to other publishers like GoGame Console Publisher, VRCForge Studios, and Welding Byte.
Now, Webnetic finds itself on the chopping block. Known for its extensive library that includes multiple versions of titles like The Golden Age and its sequel The Copper Age, the publisher took to social media to share the news. They hinted that these are indeed “final days on PlayStation” and encouraged fans to check out their games before they vanish.
Webnetic’s catalog is impressive, boasting around 128 distinct video games on the PlayStation Store alone, which includes both PS4 and PS5 versions. Trophy-hunting fans have noted that this publisher has a staggering total of 1,274 titles available, making them one of the top contributors to the store.
In their farewell message, Webnetic reassured fans that this isn’t the end of their journey. They plan to shift focus to other platforms like Xbox, Nintendo, and Steam, where they will continue to roll out new projects, including updates for a game called Panic House: Awakening.
As for when exactly their titles will be disappearing from the PlayStation Store, that remains unclear. So if you’ve had your eye on any of Webnetic’s offerings, now might be the time to dive in!
