Stardew Valley Gets a Makeover in Magic: The Gathering — Fans React!
Magic: The Gathering is once again shaking things up with its latest Secret Lair drop – this time, featuring the charming world of Stardew Valley. If you’re not familiar, Secret Lair is a limited series of card releases that often come with quirky themes and unique artwork, and they tend to fly off the shelves in no time.
Over the years, we’ve seen all sorts of wild themes, from Monty Python to Garfield, and now it’s the turn of ConcernedApe’s beloved farming simulator. The Stardew Valley community is passionate and dedicated, often crafting their own interpretations and stories around the game’s characters, similar to how fans of Overwatch engage with their favorite heroes.
One character who has particularly caught the eye — and not in a good way — is Elliott. In the game, he’s portrayed as a sensitive writer living by the beach, often depicted by fans as a delicate, stylish figure. However, the new artwork for the Mermaid’s Pendant card, which is a reskin of the Wedding Ring card, paints him quite differently. Rather than the elegant bishonen vibe fans are used to, he’s been given a more square-jawed look that has led fans on Reddit to roast the design, dubbing him a “Habbo hotel looking mf” and comparing him to various characters, including a member of the House of Hapsburg.
And it’s not just Elliott facing the heat! Penny, another popular character, has been illustrated with ringlets instead of her signature buns, while Leah appears to have a more substantial figure than what players might have expected. On the flip side, Clint has received a makeover just in time for his potential as a marriage candidate in the upcoming 1.7 update, and most fans seem to appreciate his transformation.
Despite the mixed reactions, some gamers are actually digging the new designs. Cards like Sword to Plowshares getting a Stardew Valley twist has been well-received, especially with delightful details like an autopetter hidden in the cave chest. Plus, there’s even a card dedicated to the mayor’s famous purple underpants!
ConcernedApe’s art style has always had a bit of a “programmer art” charm, and while not everyone is thrilled with the new card designs, they certainly add a unique flavor to the game. If you’re interested in snagging these cards, they’ll be available starting July 27 at 9 am on the Secret Lair website.
As we gear up for the 1.7 update, which will introduce new romantic options and a fresh farm type, it’s clear that Stardew Valley continues to grow, both in gameplay and its cultural impact. Who knows — maybe these Magic cards will spark even more love for the game!
