Steam’s Latest Update: The Rise of AI Art and Its Impact on Game Browsing
Every Monday, I dive into Steam’s new game releases from the previous week. It’s a ritual I enjoy, as it often leads me to hidden gems that I might have missed otherwise. Plus, it’s just plain entertaining! Steam is a treasure trove of the bizarre and the hilarious. For every well-crafted roguelike or metroidvania, there’s something like Fuck’s Quest 2 or the mind-boggling Milk inside a bag of milk inside a bag of milk. Tucked away in the less-visited corners of Steam are some of the weirdest and most unique titles you’ll ever come across, many of which never see the light of the front page.
However, what most of us usually come across on Steam’s homepage is primarily dictated by our gaming habits and trending titles in our region. This trend is becoming more pronounced, and frankly, it’s a bit of a letdown. In 2026, Steam is overflowing with a lot of low-effort content that feels more like a chore to sift through than a fun exploration.
The AI Art Phenomenon
As I mentioned last week, the presence of AI-generated games is growing on Steam. You can usually spot these games right away due to their distinctly artificial capsule art, which has that obvious uncanny valley effect. Despite seeming low-effort, there’s a strange uniformity in these artworks that might be seen as an aesthetic—if you squint hard enough.
- Store Simulator Pettikkada
- Chiggas – Survival of the Mitiest
Both of these titles’ capsule art screams AI-generated the moment you look at them. Pettikkada features a near-photo-realistic style reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto, while Chiggas adopts a vibrant, Pixar-esque look that has become a common default for generative AI.
Mismatch Between Art and Game
When you click through to their store pages, however, you often find a stark contrast between the enticing art and the actual game quality. This has been a long-standing issue in gaming, with box art historically not matching the content. Think back to Atari 2600 days! But today, AI art often comes off as grotesquely bland, signaling that a click would be a waste of time.
Before the AI wave, the quality of Steam’s capsule art could often hint whether a game was a cheap asset flip or a hidden indie gem. Now, that clarity is lost. A title like Chiggas could just as easily match the quality of a premium game, but unless you check the actual content, you’re left guessing.
“A game’s Steam capsule art is a huge factor in whether gamers check it out.”
It’s clear that the art used for these games lacks the charm and creativity we used to expect. They come off as cold, uninviting, and frankly, quite ugly. This surge of generic art is making it harder for curious gamers to uncover those unsung gems. In this overcrowded landscape, your next favorite title might remain hidden between a dubious vape store simulator and a game called Total Simp Death. Will Valve ever create a way for us to filter out this AI-generated noise? One can hope!
Top Steam Games This Week
Steam releases its top sellers every Wednesday, and while this week wasn’t packed with major blockbusters, here are the top games by revenue from June 9 to 16:
- Counter-Strike 2
- Meccha Chameleon
- Destiny 2
- Forza Horizon 6
- Steam Deck
- Path of Exile 2
- EA Sports FC 26
- Marvel Rivals
- Wuthering Waves
- Destiny 2: Renegades
The standout this week is definitely Meccha Chameleon, a quirky multiplayer hide-and-seek game that has sold over 7 million copies since its release on June 10. Its creator, Lemorion, has been quite active, launching six games since late 2024, but none have hit the mark like Meccha Chameleon.
Destiny 2 is also seeing a resurgence following major updates, and with EA FC 26 being on an 80% discount, it’s no surprise it climbed back up the charts.
Noteworthy Steam Releases
Here are some new games you might want to check out:
- Moon River (June 20) – A free, exploration-focused RPG with emotional pixel art, chronicling a sailor’s journey down a mysterious river.
- MOLE (June 16) – A narrative-driven horror set in a post-war drilling machine, featuring survival elements in a grim environment.
- goblinAmerica (March 18) – A vibrant first-person shooter with a unique art style, reminiscent of the old-school fast-paced gameplay.
- The Last Salvage Squad (June 18) – A minimalist anime-style FPS that takes players through stylish sci-fi arenas.
