Supergirl Struggles at the Box Office Despite Crossing $100 Million Mark

Supergirl has just crossed the $100 (approx. Rs 27,800) million mark at the global box office, but it’s not all good news. In fact, its second weekend saw one of the steepest drops ever recorded for a superhero film. This comes as yet another setback for the DC Universe after a shaky start for this latest entry.

Despite reaching a global total of $100.47 (approx. Rs 27,930) million, Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, raked in only $9.6 (approx. Rs 2,670) million at home and $9.4 (approx. Rs 2,610) million internationally during its second weekend—an alarming 74% decline from its initial domestic opening of $37.1 (approx. Rs 10,310) million. This sharp drop has left Warner Bros. and DC reeling, placing Supergirl alongside other superhero flops like Joker: Folie à Deux, Morbius, The Marvels, and The Flash, all of which suffered similar fates.

As the holiday weekend wraps up, Supergirl is sitting in fourth place at the global box office, behind titles like Minions & Monsters, Toy Story 5, and Young Washington. Initially, the film was labeled a box office bomb with a disappointing debut of $68 (approx. Rs 18,900) million following its launch on June 26. With a hefty production budget of $170 (approx. Rs 47,260) million and an additional $120 (approx. Rs 33,360) million for marketing, the studio needed approximately $300 (approx. Rs 83,400) million just to break even.

While projections suggested the film could potentially hit $200 (approx. Rs 55,600) million—a figure that would still reflect a $100 (approx. Rs 27,800) million loss—the current trajectory indicates it might struggle to reach that benchmark. Despite being a pivotal entry in the DCU, the significant drop in ticket sales raises concerns about the franchise’s future.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran acknowledged the film’s performance, stating that while Supergirl didn’t meet their box office expectations, it’s just one part of a larger, long-term strategy for DC that they remain optimistic about. With Superman kicking off the DCU with great success, fans are hoping Supergirl doesn’t derail the momentum of what could be an exciting cinematic universe.

Looking ahead, the next project on the horizon is the body horror film Clayface, scheduled for an October 2026 release, followed by the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, set for July 2027. Alcock will reprise her role in Man of Tomorrow, with hints that her character will be significant in later DCU installments. There’s also the upcoming TV series Lanterns, which is slated to premiere in August.

For those curious, Supergirl received a mixed review, earning a 6/10 rating, and there are rumors of creative differences impacting the film’s final cut. The future of the DC Universe remains uncertain, but fans are hopeful for what’s to come.
