The Fallout 3 That Never Was: A New Vegas Mod Revives Van Buren
The world of Fallout is no stranger to canceled projects, fan revivals, and ambitious modding endeavors. One such attempt has just reached a significant milestone: the United West Team modding group has released the first demo for Revelation Blues, a mod that seeks to tell the story of Black Isle Studios’ canceled Fallout 3 project, codenamed Van Buren, within the framework of Fallout: New Vegas.
The Lost Fallout 3
Before Bethesda’s Fallout 3 became the defining entry in the series for many, Van Buren was Black Isle Studios’ ambitious take on the next chapter of the franchise. Though the project was ultimately shelved, elements of its worldbuilding survived and were later incorporated into Fallout: New Vegas. Now, Revelation Blues is attempting to bring that lost vision back to life.
The demo focuses on Burham Springs, an area that was originally planned for Van Buren. This eerie, abandoned town sits atop a never-ending coal fire, inspired by the real-life Centralia Mine Fire. The town’s tragic fate was sealed by NCR soldiers who, in their attempt to drive out fleeing Powder Gangers after an assault on the Hoover Dam, inadvertently triggered the disaster. The surviving mutated inhabitants, known as “Gehennas” and “Molechs” by New Canaan residents, add to the town’s haunting atmosphere.
The Van Buren Influence on New Vegas
Even without Van Buren’s official release, its DNA is woven into Fallout: New Vegas. Elements such as Caesar’s Legion, Joshua Graham, the Big MT, and the broader struggle of a morally ambiguous NCR all originated from Black Isle’s original plans. This makes New Vegas a natural home for a Van Buren reimagining, and Revelation Blues seeks to do just that.
Competing Projects for a Lost Fallout
Revelation Blues isn’t the only project trying to resurrect Van Buren. Developer Adam Lacko has been working on Project Van Buren (PVB) for years, attempting to reconstruct the game using original mechanics, an isometric perspective, and Black Isle’s leaked documentation. However, Lacko has recently been brought on as lead developer for New Blood’s upcoming Fallout-inspired CRPG, meaning that PVB is likely to take a backseat for now.
The Other Canceled Fallout 3: Troika’s Forgotten Pitch
Beyond Van Buren, there’s yet another layer to the lost Fallout 3 history: Troika Games’ pitch. Founded by Fallout veterans Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky, and Jason Anderson, Troika originally envisioned a game that combined magic with retro-futurism on an alien world. When Bethesda acquired the Fallout rights, this pitch was reworked into a standalone RPG, but the project was ultimately canceled when Troika shut down. What remains of this vision is a short demo video and a discussion by Tim Cain on YouTube.
Will the Real Fallout 3 Please Stand Up?
With all these different versions of Fallout 3, it’s easy to see why fans remain fascinated by the paths not taken. Whether through Revelation Blues, Project Van Buren, or Troika’s lost concept, the echoes of what might have been continue to shape the franchise. While Bethesda’s Fallout 3 is the official canon, modders and developers alike are ensuring that these forgotten visions of the wasteland still have a chance to shine.
