The Future of Gaming: AI-Prompted Games Might Not Be What We Want

Guillaume Broche, the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has some intriguing thoughts about the future of game development. During a lively discussion on Konbini’s Video Game Club, he touched on the rise of generative AI in gaming, suggesting that one day, we might be able to create an entire game with just a prompt. However, this prospect makes him, along with many fellow developers, a bit uneasy.

Broche made it clear that Sandfall Interactive, the studio he leads, isn’t looking to incorporate AI technology into any creative aspects of their work. While they might utilize it for administrative tasks and coding—depending on the situation—he believes that generating anything more profound could rob the creative process of its joy.

Last year, the studio faced backlash when AI-generated textures were discovered in Clair Obscur. Although these elements were quickly removed and labeled as placeholders, the incident resulted in the loss of at least two Game of the Year awards for the studio. Looking ahead, Broche assures fans that their next project will steer clear of similar tech mishaps.

“I think everyone’s a little scared about what the future holds,” Broche shared. “In gaming, we still have some safeguards since it’s a unique field. But the day might come when we can whip up a game in just five seconds. Will it be a good game? I truly hope not. It’s a question that’s on all our minds, and it’s definitely a bit terrifying.”

Despite the challenges that lie ahead, Broche and his team are riding high after the success of Clair Obscur, feeling secure enough to explore their creative paths without the burden of pressure. “That’s what makes me happy—we’re a stable studio. So even if we’re not doing everything perfectly, we’re not overly concerned,” he concluded.

Broche regards Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as a spiritual successor to the often-overlooked JRPG Lost Odyssey, created by the mastermind behind Final Fantasy. He calls it one of the most powerful and emotional experiences he’s ever had.
