The Game Soundtrack That Stole Your Heart: A Nostalgic Journey

Gaming has been a part of my life since I was just a little kid, barely able to grasp a Mega Drive controller without fumbling. I reckon my dad was trying to convince my mom that splurging on a CD add-on was justified, but I later learned it malfunctioned shortly after purchase. I still have my suspicions that my mom might have had a role in that. Welcome to our cozy corner where we celebrate the world of gaming music and sound design!

Thinking back, those early gaming experiences opened the door to a vast array of music for me. From orchestral scores to rock and hip-hop, video game music has molded my tastes and continues to shape my life as I edge closer to my 30s.

I have fuzzy memories of playing Puzzle Bobble on the family PC and various educational games like Learning Land. Curiously, I can vividly recall Learning Land 3: At the Funfair, even though I can’t remember much else from that era. Strangely enough, I never really paid attention to the music back then. Did Learning Land even have a soundtrack? Who knows! But the first time I truly noticed video game music was while playing Killer Instinct Gold on the Nintendo 64.

That console sparked my love for gaming soundtracks, even though my collection at the time was limited to GoldenEye 007 and Wave Race 64 alongside Rare’s fighting gem. The metallic clashes and killer guitar riffs? Pure magic! I’m convinced Killer Instinct is what turned me into a bit of an emo back in the day. It was seriously formative.

I remember resetting my console over and over just to jam to the music, a habit that carried on into the era of MP3s and downloadable tunes. Final Fantasy 10-2’s “Real Emotion” became a household favorite, leading to countless resets on my PlayStation 2 just so I could relive the soundtrack all over again.

Now, I’m curious about your journeys! What was the first soundtrack that made you fall in love with video game music? Share your memories in the comments, and let’s reminisce about those tracks that ignited our passion for gaming soundtracks!
