The id Tech Engine Dilemma: Microsoft’s Reassurance vs. Ex-Devs’ Dire Warning

The recent wave of layoffs sweeping across the gaming industry has hit hard, and id Software, the legendary studio behind iconic titles like Doom and Quake, was no exception. With a significant number of employees let go – reportedly 136 individuals – it’s no wonder the gaming community in Pakistan and worldwide is concerned about the studio’s future, with one former artist even suggesting id Software might be relegated to a “support studio” role.

At the heart of these concerns lies the fate of the id Tech engine. For decades, id Tech has been synonymous with cutting-edge performance and raw power, often praised for its ability to deliver incredibly smooth gameplay even when its competitors struggled. Imagine a game engine so optimized it feels like it’s running on pure adrenaline – that’s id Tech for many gamers. The thought of this powerhouse engine being sidelined in favor of something like Unreal Engine is a tough pill to swallow for many.

Microsoft, who owns id Software under the Xbox umbrella, quickly moved to address these fears. Through official channels and statements, they assured everyone that id Tech is far from being abandoned. They explicitly stated that “dozens of people” are still actively working on id Tech across various locations, directly countering rumors that only a handful of developers remained.

However, a recent in-depth industry report has surfaced, featuring an interview with a former id Software worker who was part of the recent layoffs. Their perspective paints a starkly different and much more pessimistic picture. According to this individual, the mass redundancies have effectively gutted the teams responsible for maintaining and evolving the engine. “They’ve just gotten rid of all the people who could ever fix, maintain, or change [id Tech], so it’s most likely going to end up in the trash can,” the former employee stated.

The report details significant losses in crucial departments. For instance, the VFX team reportedly lost five members, including its lead, while the technical art and design department is now left with only its lead. The former employee emphasized that the “institutional knowledge” surrounding id Tech that has been lost is “immense.” They went on to express a deep concern for the engine’s future, stating, “I cannot imagine a path forward where they make another game in id Tech.”

This situation presents a clear contrast: Microsoft’s official stance of reassurance versus the grim reality described by a laid-off developer who has little to lose by speaking candidly. It’s a challenging time for developers across the industry to find new roles, making it understandable why current employees might be hesitant to voice dissent. However, when former staff, no longer bound by company lines, share their experiences, the true impact of such large-scale changes often comes to light.

The ultimate fate of the id Tech engine and whether id Software will create future games using its legendary tech remains to be seen. But for now, the gaming community is left to ponder the stark difference between corporate optimism and the very real human impact of industry shifts.
