The Witcher Remake: Going Open World is No Walk in the Park

The iconic Witcher game, which first hit the shelves back in 2007, was known for its linear gameplay, featuring distinct maps that players navigated in a structured manner. Fast forward to today, and a remake is in the works by Fool’s Theory, aiming to give this classic title a modern twist as an open-world RPG. It sounds straightforward—just model it after The Witcher 3, right? Well, not quite.

Artur Ganszyniec, a designer who contributed to the original Witcher and its sequel, recently shared some insights on the complexities of this ambitious project in an interview. He highlighted that shifting to an open-world format requires a significant overhaul of how developers create and integrate content. “It’s more than just expanding the map; we need to fill that space with engaging activities and interactions,” he explained.

One of the biggest challenges is that in the original game, the developers knew exactly where players would be at any time. This allowed for tightly scripted events and character interactions, such as introducing characters like Alvin at specific points. However, in an open-world setting, players can approach tasks and locations in a myriad of ways, which complicates things immensely. “Everything has to be designed to accommodate varied player paths, or else the experience can fall apart,” he added, comparing this to the classic ‘square peg in a round hole’ analogy.

Ganszyniec’s comments shed light on why, even four years after the remake was announced, concrete details about it remain sparse. This isn’t just about rehashing an old game; it’s about rethinking its core elements, and that kind of ambition doesn’t come easy. His extensive experience, including his recent role as a narrative consultant on Fool’s Theory’s new RPG, The Thaumaturge, underscores the weight of these challenges.

Interestingly, Ganszyniec seems somewhat relieved that he isn’t directly tackling this remake. He posed a thought-provoking question about one of the game’s significant late-game scenarios: “If this were an open world, what would prevent me from taking a boat from the outskirts of Vizima straight to the old manor?” While players might find freedom in such choices thrilling, for designers, it could lead to more than just gray hair.

As fans eagerly await more updates on this reimagined classic, it’s clear that transforming The Witcher into a sprawling open-world adventure is a daunting task, one that requires careful thought and innovative design. Stay tuned for more news on this exciting project!
