Valve Engineers Warn of Ongoing Memory Crisis Impacting Gaming Hardware
Valve’s engineers behind the Steam Machine have shared some not-so-great news about the tech industry’s ongoing memory crisis. Yazan Aldehayyat and Pierre-Loup Griffais recently discussed the situation, revealing that the skyrocketing prices for RAM are showing no signs of improvement. They highlighted the significant influence that the AI boom has had on these costs.
Aldehayyat candidly remarked, “Honestly, it’s still getting worse,” emphasizing that the retail prices we see now are lagging behind the bulk supply by a staggering three to six months. To give you an idea, the base model of the Steam Machine started at a steep $1,049 (approx. Rs 291,620) for just 512GB, while the high-end version with a 2TB storage comes bundled with a Steam Controller for an eye-watering $1,428 (approx. Rs 396,980).
When Valve initially announced the Steam Machine back in November 2025, they anticipated some challenges, but nothing of this magnitude. Griffais mentioned that Valve is doing everything they can to meet demand but has been seriously hindered by memory shortages.
“We knew there was going to be an issue with sourcing,” Aldehayyat said, “but the extent was beyond anything we actually expected.” This crunch isn’t just affecting the Steam Machine; Valve is also struggling to keep up with the immense demand for the Steam Deck. They expressed a desire to lower prices for the Steam Machine but warned that any reduction is not on the horizon.
The memory crisis isn’t just a Valve issue; it’s echoing throughout the industry. Micron’s CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, has predicted that this RAM shortage could linger until 2027, while Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney has cautioned high-end PC gamers about continuing pricing challenges in the years to come.
As console giants like Sony and Microsoft prepare for the next generation, Sony is still contemplating the launch strategy for the anticipated PS6. It seems the gaming community will need to brace itself for some challenging times ahead.
