What If Wolfenstein 3D Took a Different Turn? Check Out Isowulf!

Ever wonder what it would be like if classic games took a different route? Well, that’s exactly what modder LoGeKyl thought when he created Isowulf, a fresh take on the iconic Wolfenstein 3D. Instead of simply adding new features, he flipped the script and asked, “What if this was a completely different, arguably inferior game?” Now, when I say “inferior,” I’m not knocking LoGeKyl’s talent; it’s just that his concept—a reimagined Wolfenstein 3D viewed from an isometric perspective—evokes a nostalgic alternate reality where id Software might have pursued a top-down adventure instead of revolutionizing the first-person shooter genre.

Imagine a world where id decided to continue with 2D graphics after the Commander Keen platformers, leading to a puzzle-action game reminiscent of the old Castle Wolfenstein. Without that pivotal move to 3D, would we have ever seen the birth of Doom? Quite possibly not!

Now, let’s not get too gloomy about the “what-ifs.” LoGeKyl’s Isowulf is actually pretty impressive, showcasing his deep love for the early days of id Software. He shares on Isowulf’s ModDB page how discovering the talented team behind Wolfenstein opened his eyes to game development. “The credits were right there: John Carmack, John Romero, Adrian Carmack, and Tom Hall. I thought, ‘Hey, these are the same names I saw on Commander Keen!'” From that moment, he knew he wanted to dive into game creation.

To fuel his passion, LoGeKyl often listens to audiobooks like *Masters of Doom* or Romero’s own autobiography while gearing up for new projects. For Isowulf, he wanted to see how well the original design of Wolfenstein 3D would translate into a different format, pulling the camera back to create a shooter reminiscent of Diablo.

Surprisingly, the original game’s design still shines through, even from this new angle. LoGeKyl initially thought he’d need to tweak things like movement speed or enemy AI, but it turns out everything just clicks without major modifications. The only real addition he made was a sprite of B.J. Blazkowicz since the original game didn’t provide one in the first-person view.

Although Isowulf debuted about six months ago, it has continuously evolved, now featuring all the original game’s episodes, along with saving and loading options and customizable key bindings. If we could magically swap Isowulf with the original Wolfenstein 3D back in time, would the FPS genre still have emerged? Perhaps it would’ve just taken a bit longer. But who knows—if Isowulf had existed before Diablo, maybe Blizzard North would have created the first real-time first-person shooter instead!

So, if you’re a fan of retro gaming or curious about how classic titles can be reimagined, give Isowulf a shot. It’s a unique spin on a beloved classic that every gamer can appreciate!
