Wooting’s Lekker Knob: Is This Gaming’s Next Big Thing?

Suna hai? The gaming world is always buzzing with new tech, and this time, it’s Wooting making waves with something called the “Lekker Knob.” For all you keyboard enthusiasts out there, especially those rocking the Wooting 80 HE, prepare yourselves – this isn’t just any dial; it’s a serious upgrade that’s set to change how we interact with our games!

Remember last year at Computex when Wooting teased us with a knob for their popular analogue gaming keyboard, the 80 HE? Well, good news! That “Lekker Knob large” is almost ready to roll out. It’s designed to perfectly replace those four navigation keys right above your arrow keys on the 80 HE. Now, you might be thinking, “Oh, just another volume dial?” Not a chance, boss!

Wooting’s lead software engineer, Simon Whyte, has spilled the beans, and let’s just say this knob is packed with far more potential. Inside Wooting’s own software, the ‘Wootility,’ you get four main ways to program this bad boy. Imagine this:

  • Relative Mode: Turn it one way for one action, the other way for another. Simple, intuitive.
  • Absolute Mode: Each point on the dial can be set to a specific value. Think precise control over game settings or even colour palettes!
  • Zoned Mode: Divide the knob into smaller sections. Press the centre button, and each slice triggers a unique action. Perfect for quick hotkeys!
  • Analog Mode: This is where it gets really interesting. The further you turn, the stronger the input. Imagine feathering the throttle in a racing game or adjusting a sniper scope with incredible finesse.

The magic here is its analogue nature. Unlike traditional dials that are simply “on” or “off” at certain points, the Lekker Knob knows exactly where it is at all times. This opens up a whole universe of possibilities for control that a standard dial just can’t touch.

But wait, there’s more! The Wootility also supports programmable layers. So, turn the knob normally, and it does one thing. Hold down, say, ‘Ctrl’ and turn it, and it can do something completely different if you’ve set it up that way! Want to go even deeper? Press ‘Ctrl’ + ‘Alt’ and turn the knob for yet another layer of commands. Zara sochein, the customisation possibilities for your favourite games!

The Wooting team is even experimenting with some wild ideas, like using the knob as a steering wheel input for racing games – though they quickly add it’s just an experiment for now. But it really shows how much thought and effort, nearly three years of development, has gone into making this knob a versatile media and gaming control hub.

Currently, the Lekker Knob is specifically designed for the 80 HE keyboard, fitting neatly above those arrow keys. However, for those of you with other Wooting keyboards, don’t despair! The team is also working on a smaller, single key-sized knob that might make its way to other models down the line, but that’s still under wraps for now.

When can you get your hands on it? Wooting is hoping to have the Lekker Knob ready by the end of this year, though they’ve marked that as a rough estimate. So, keep an eye out!

And that’s not all from Wooting! This summer, expect some cool updates to the Wootility software. They’re adding features that let users remap keys with preset hotkeys, like the infamous Alt + F4 (if you’re feeling adventurous!). Max Janssen, Wooting’s partnerships manager, even joked about playing “Alt + F4 roulette” with the new knob, assigning various emojis to most zones but setting one to the game-ending command. This update, by the way, will be available to all Wooting users, not just Lekker Knob owners. Zabardast!

All in all, the Lekker Knob is shaping up to be a game-changer, offering a level of control and customisation that goes far beyond what we’ve come to expect from a simple dial. Get ready to elevate your gaming experience, Pakistani gamers!
