Xbox Game Pass Price Cut: A Smart Move for Gamers?

In the world of gaming, sometimes making things cheaper really does encourage more people to jump on board! This idea isn’t just theory—it’s been backed by some real-world evidence from Xbox. A recent internal memo from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has revealed that a drop in Game Pass prices is leading to positive outcomes.

Back in April, Sharma noted that Xbox needed to reevaluate its “value equation” for Game Pass, especially after a noticeable price jump in October 2025. At that time, the Ultimate tier of Game Pass saw a whopping 50% increase, skyrocketing from $19.99 (approx. Rs 5,600) to $29.99 (approx. Rs 8,400) per month. However, following Sharma’s remarks, the prices were adjusted. Although they remained higher than the previous rates from October, the Ultimate subscription now costs $22.99 (approx. Rs 6,440) monthly. One downside is that popular titles like the Call of Duty series will no longer be available at launch; instead, they’ll roll out about a year later.

Interestingly, it seems that many gamers found the previous price tag a bit steep. As Sharma pointed out, “Growth slowed down and subscriber loss accelerated after the pricing and SKU changes last year.” But the good news is that following the price reduction, they’ve seen an uptick in new subscribers and better retention rates. Sharma calls this progress a “good first step” but emphasizes that fixing the situation will take more than just one change.

It’s clear that the Game Pass became a tad too pricey for a large section of Xbox players. While $360 (approx. Rs 100,800) a year isn’t chump change, it might seem excessive for the casual gamer who only dives into a handful of titles each year. Plus, with sales on platforms like Steam, that amount can feel even heavier.

As for the future of Game Pass, simply slashing prices may not be the only strategy on the horizon. There are whispers about possibly introducing ad-supported services, especially after the price hikes. Sharma also mentioned that Xbox is undergoing some rebranding efforts to better connect with its audience. However, it looks like they won’t be dragging the community into that particular rebranding journey.

Only time will tell how Game Pass continues to evolve, but one thing is for sure: the gaming landscape is always shifting, and Xbox is keen to keep up with its audience’s needs!

Note: PKR figures are approximate, based on a rate of Rs 280.00 per USD. Exchange rates fluctuate — please check the latest dollar rate for exact pricing.
