Grey Fox Takes Center Stage in Metal Gear Solid Mod
Exciting news for Metal Gear Solid fans! A talented modder has brought the legendary Grey Fox to life as a playable character in the original Metal Gear Solid, and it’s turning out to be way more impressive than you might think.
While Snake often steals the spotlight as one of the greatest video game characters ever, Metal Gear Solid is packed with a roster of memorable supporting characters that players have long wished to control. Despite a few side adventures in games like MGS2’s Tanker and Snake Tales, the series typically sticks to its main characters. This is where Grey Fox comes in, a fan-favorite who first dazzled players in the MSX2 titles and made a memorable entrance in Metal Gear Solid as the series’ iconic Cyborg Ninja.
Grey Fox was such a hit that he became the face of Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions, where players could control him for a couple of missions. Hideo Kojima even dreamt of giving him his own game following Metal Gear Rising, but that idea never panned out. Now, thanks to YouTube user Perfect Pizza, Grey Fox is finally getting the spotlight he deserves with the release of the “Playable Grey Fox mod” for Metal Gear Solid.
At first glance, you might think this mod simply imports the VR Missions character into the main game. However, it’s much more sophisticated than that! The trailer showcases Grey Fox’s arm cannon, a feature that was present in the original game but never utilized during his brief playable moments. Plus, his High Frequency Blade has received a significant upgrade, now capable of ricocheting bullets back at foes and sporting a flashy new trailing effect. The mod also introduces new movement mechanics, allowing players to crouch walk, adding depth to gameplay.
This mod brings a plethora of enhancements, including automatic visor adjustments when alert, unique animations, and personalized codec calls. On the mod’s Discord server, Perfect Pizza shared insights about their process. They utilized the PSX decompilation project to modify the game’s code, creating a new executable from the developer’s version of Metal Gear Solid. They mentioned, “As of now, neither the AI Grey Fox boss nor the playable VR Ninja has been fully decompiled, so we’ve relied on reverse engineering and some educated guesses to recreate what you see.”
The goal is to let players enjoy a more expanded portrayal of Grey Fox compared to his VR Missions stint, integrating as many signature abilities and new features as the game’s constraints allow. And while this isn’t a full story mode conversion, there are discussions of a future project that aims to enable a complete playthrough as Grey Fox by reworking all stage overlays.
Even if a full-game version doesn’t come to fruition, this mod promises plenty of fun and nostalgia for fans. After nearly 25 years, players are still uncovering secrets in Metal Gear Solid, proving that this classic title continues to surprise and delight!
