John Carmack Shares Thoughts on id Software Layoffs: A Tough Break for an Iconic Studio

John Carmack, the co-founder of the legendary id Software, has voiced his feelings regarding the recent significant layoffs at the studio, which is now under Microsoft’s ownership. In a move that has shocked many, Microsoft is letting go of 136 employees, reportedly more than half of the studio’s workforce, just after the release of the new expansion for Doom: The Dark Ages.

Carmack took to social media to express his disappointment, stating, “My ‘Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand’ statement isn’t aging well.” He acknowledged that this news would likely cast a shadow over the upcoming founder reunion at QuakeCon, set to take place next month.

Despite his obvious sadness over the layoffs, Carmack refrained from directly criticizing Microsoft’s decision. He commented, “I’m saddened, but I can’t muster anger or outrage over it.” From his perspective, he believes that id Software may not have been a lucrative investment for Microsoft, noting that reports suggest that Minecraft’s revenue has been funneled to support other less successful studios within the Xbox umbrella for years.

In light of the layoffs, Carmack pondered whether there were alternative strategies that could have prevented this situation. He mused about different pricing strategies, additional purchasable content for fans, and more effective marketing efforts that could potentially have broadened the appeal of id’s games without alienating loyal fans.

Adding to the conversation, fellow co-founder of id Software, John Romero, expressed his heartbreak for those affected, recalling his own experiences when his studio faced funding cuts from Xbox. “I know how devastating it is, and my heart’s with all of you,” he shared, reflecting on the difficulty of leaving a place rich with memories and friendships.

This situation at id Software highlights the brutal realities of the gaming industry, where even iconic studios can face tough decisions. As the gaming community watches closely, fans are left hoping for a brighter future for both the studio and its talented developers.
