Saber Interactive Soars After Space Marine 2 Success, Turning Down Major Licenses
In a time when the gaming industry seems to be facing a series of unfortunate events, with layoffs and canceled projects making headlines, there’s one studio that’s riding high on success—Saber Interactive. Known for their previous work on vehicle simulators and titles like World War Z, Saber hit a goldmine with their latest release, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which has dramatically boosted their reputation.
Tim Willits, the Chief Creative Officer of Saber, shared that the release of Space Marine 2 has been a game-changer for the studio. He mentioned in a recent interview that the sequel “literally changed everything” for Saber, reshaping not only their approach to game development but also how the industry perceives them.
Willits elaborated that the success of Space Marine 2 has supercharged the studio’s confidence and goals. Drawing from his own experience, he noted that a hit game raises the stakes for the next project. “When you have a huge hit, everything has to be awesome. It’s like, ‘This has got to be the most awesome toaster ever,’” he quipped, emphasizing how success breeds more success.
But it doesn’t stop there—Saber is now attracting interest from major licenses eager to collaborate. Willits mentioned that they’re in a fortunate position where they can afford to turn down offers that come their way. “We are in a very fortunate position to turn down more than we can accept. I can’t drop any names, but you know you’ve made it when you can say no to those big players,” he added with a mix of pride and amusement.
The studio’s strategy moving forward involves adapting more established franchises into games, such as the upcoming Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival. Willits pointed out that well-known properties tend to have a built-in audience, making them a safer bet for success. “If we were to create a survival horror game from scratch, it would be a tougher climb. But people know Hellraiser. They know Space Marine, and the success of Space Marine 2 has proven that,” he said.
As Saber Interactive continues to build on its momentum, it’s clear that their future is looking bright, especially with plans to explore more popular licenses in the gaming world. Keep an eye on this studio as they navigate this exciting phase!
