Destiny 2’s Farewell Boosts Player Count Dramatically on Steam

Destiny 2 has long been a staple in the world of online shooters, captivating players for nearly a decade. Recently, news of the game’s active development coming to an end has sent shockwaves through the community, sparking a wave of emotions among fans. Last month, Bungie released the game’s final update, titled Monument of Triumph, which not only served as a farewell but also brought players old and new flocking back to the game.

According to data from SteamDB, the player count for Destiny 2 surged to over 165,000 concurrent players, marking the highest numbers the game has seen in years. This significant spike in player activity even eclipsed the numbers from summer 2024, when Destiny 2 was nearing its peak of around 316,750 players.

Recent insights from Mat Piscatella, a senior director at Circana, offer another perspective on this resurgence. Instead of just player counts, he highlighted the game’s impressive climb up Steam’s monthly active user rankings. Destiny 2 skyrocketed from a lowly 32nd position all the way to 5th place in June 2026 among US-based users—an incredible turnaround for a title many deemed near its end.

However, while this temporary revival is impressive, it’s bittersweet. With Bungie now shifting its focus to their new project, Marathon, the fate of Destiny 2 seems sealed. Many in the gaming community, including developers from other studios, have expressed concern, highlighting that if a giant like Bungie can face such challenges, it raises alarms for all in the industry. As one passionate fan put it, the abrupt end of Destiny 2’s journey leaves behind a sense of what could have been.

As players celebrate the game’s legacy and reminisce about their adventures, the future of Destiny 2 remains uncertain, making these final moments all the more poignant for its dedicated fanbase.
