Rockstar Legend Dan Houser: Give Gamers Physical Copies If They Want Them!

The never-ending debate between physical game copies and digital downloads is a hot topic among gamers, and now, none other than Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has thrown his hat into the ring. You know, the mind behind epic titles like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption!

Speaking recently, Houser shared his thoughts on the state of physical media in our gaming world. While he admitted that personally, he doesn’t have a strong preference for discs over digital downloads, his opinion on what companies *should* do for us gamers was crystal clear.

“I don’t know that I care, but if people want that, I think companies should provide it,” Houser stated. It’s a simple, straightforward take, but it speaks volumes about listening to the player base.

This conversation couldn’t be more timely, with gamers everywhere buzzing about the shift towards digital. PlayStation recently made headlines by confirming they’ll be stopping the production of new physical games from January 2028. And let’s not forget the big one for many of us: the confirmation that Grand Theft Auto 6, arguably the most anticipated game ever, won’t be shipping on a disc when it launches this November. Talk about a seismic shift!

However, Houser also brought up a crucial point often overlooked in the physical vs. digital argument. “I also think that, as critical as people are of digital releases, the ability to update and fix problems in games has been really useful for the quality of games.” He’s right, those day-one patches and post-launch fixes have saved many games from being unplayable at launch.

Joining Houser in the discussion was Lazlow Jones, who also worked with him at Rockstar and is now at their new venture, Absurd Ventures. Lazlow shared a balanced view, acknowledging the unique feeling of getting a new disc but also appreciating the convenience of digital. “We all have that sort of feeling when you get that copy, and you put the disc in the console,” he said, before adding, “but I also have to say I really like being at the airport and going, ‘Oh, cool. I can download some quick games to my Steam Deck for this 12-hour flight.'”

It’s clear that for many, there’s a nostalgic pull towards physical media, a tangible product you can hold and display. Houser himself interjected, “I love physical media,” highlighting that even industry veterans appreciate the charm of a physical game.

Houser isn’t the only big name to weigh in on this. Creators like Yoko Taro (NieR), Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid), and Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot have also shared their thoughts on where the industry is heading regarding physical releases.

For now, Dan Houser is focused on Absurd Ventures, the company he founded and announced in 2023. But it’s good to see influential figures like him still advocating for player choice in an ever-evolving gaming landscape.
