Exciting Crossover: Dungeons & Dragons Meets World of Warcraft!

This year’s Gen Con is shaping up to be a huge event, with Wizards of the Coast promising to go all out. Theo Solomon, the actor who portrayed Wyll in Baldur’s Gate 3, will be hosting the keynote, which is expected to unveil plenty of exciting announcements for Dungeons & Dragons. Among the buzz, an intriguing leak has surfaced about a crossover with World of Warcraft.

According to a now-removed post from the virtual tabletop platform Roll20, which has been archived by various RPG communities, we might see a new setting book dedicated to Warcraft for D&D 5th edition. This wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a collaboration between Blizzard and D&D. Back when Diablo 2 was all the rage, Wizards of the Coast released several official books that adapted the Sanctuary universe into D&D’s framework. Additionally, there was a World of Warcraft RPG that utilized the 3rd edition rules, published under an Open Gaming License by White Wolf, known for their Vampire: The Masquerade series.

It’s easy to see why World of Warcraft fans would be excited about having a D&D version that includes unique rules for playing as tauren or other iconic races. However, given how closely Warcraft aligns with D&D’s core themes, some might wonder if there’s a real need for an entirely new rulebook just to highlight the differences in their versions of elves and other fantasy staples. While Diablo’s darker, heavier atmosphere offers a fresh take on fantasy, Warcraft tends to stick to more traditional tropes.

Gen Con will be running from July 30 to August 2, and we’re hoping for some announcements that will really shake things up. Perhaps this will be the year we finally see the return of classic settings like Dark Sun or Birthright, or maybe even a new Al-Qadim book to spice things up!
