He emphatically stated that Chris Evans’ character won’t be picking up the shield as Captain America again. “It’s Steve Rogers returning, not Captain America,” Mackie clarified. Then, with a playful jab at self-proclaimed comic book nerds, he added, “Steve Rogers in the comic book – there is a comic book… Don’t be a nerd by trade, be a nerd by fact. So, in the comic book, Steve Rogers becomes Nomad.”
Woah! Nomad? For those who might not be deep into the Marvel comics lore, this is a pretty significant reveal. In the comics, Steve Rogers briefly abandons his Captain America title and identity after becoming disillusioned with the U.S. government. He essentially becomes a “man without a country,” fighting for justice as Nomad, free from any national allegiance. It was a short but impactful storyline back in the mid-70s.
Naturally, when pressed if this “Nomad” storyline could play out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mackie quickly backtracked, feigning ignorance with a laugh, “I don’t know! I don’t even watch movies!” Typical actor move when they’ve probably said too much, right?
