The Retail Sim Surge: Steam’s Latest Wave of Quirky Games
Steam’s been buzzing lately, and it’s all thanks to a relentless tide of retail simulators hitting the platform like clockwork. This crazy trend kicked off in late 2024, and here we are, still seeing new titles dropping weekly. What’s more surprising is how many of these games are managing to attract players despite their somewhat basic aesthetics.
Last week alone, Steam welcomed 14 new retail sims into its library. Now, before you start thinking every idle game or horror title set in a retail space counts, let me clarify: I’m sticking to those classic first-person retail sims. You know the type—where you’re unpacking boxes, scanning items at checkouts, and managing stock. Most of them come from the prolific Polish publisher PlayWay, and they’ve definitely set the bar for this niche.
Here’s a quick rundown of what dropped last week, along with their peak concurrent player counts:
- Bobble Shop Simulator – Released July 24 – Peak: 3
- Boba Cafe Simulator – Released July 24 – Peak: 7,523
- Bookshop Simulator – Released July 21 – Peak: 1,378
- Car Sales Simulator – Released July 23 – Peak: 54
- Datacenter Simulator – Released July 21 – Peak: 3
- Golf Superstore Simulator – Released July 23 – Peak: 6
- Gym Rat Simulator – Released July 24 – Peak: 2
- Kimbap Heaven Simulator – Released July 22 – Peak: 23
- Mall Together – Released July 24 – Peak: 1,199
- Market Empire Simulator – Released July 23 – Peak: 4
- Model Kit Shop Simulator – Released July 24 – Peak: 117
- Toll Plaza Simulator – Released July 21 – Peak: 25
- Wild West Miner Simulator: First Gun – Released July 23 – Peak: 86
- Waterpump Simulator – Released July 21 – Peak: 1
Out of the bunch, Boba Cafe Simulator is the clear standout, boasting over 7,500 overwhelmingly positive reviews. While there aren’t many professional critiques out there, it’s been a hit among streamers and YouTube creators alike. The demo that dropped in September also gained a bit of traction. On the other hand, Bookshop Simulator, which just launched its full version, has a unique style compared to the rest, steering clear of common AI-generated art pitfalls.
Another game worth noting is Mall Together, which encourages players to build an entire shopping mall instead of just one store. It’s the only successful title from last week that openly admitted to using AI for its visual assets.
So, what do these successful titles have in common? Well, not much except for online co-op support. Interestingly, some popular retail sims like TCG Card Shop Simulator stick to single-player experiences instead.
It’s hard to ignore how rapidly these games are being churned out. Two titles from last week—Model Kit Shop Simulator and Wild West Miner Simulator: First Gun—came from PlayWay, which has been on a roll, releasing four games since July 20 alone. Currently, PlayWay has a whopping 474 products listed on Steam, but many are still in limbo with vague release dates.
Industry analyst Simon Carless touched on this in a newsletter, suggesting that PlayWay might be announcing games just to gauge interest through wishlists. While the wishlists aren’t public, some titles like Low-Budget Repairs and Car Mechanic Simulator 2026 are already among the most sought-after, indicating that they might actually see the light of day.
What’s baffling is that while many of these games might seem like shovelware, PlayWay has also produced some quality titles like House Flipper 2 and Thief Simulator. It’s a bit of a gamble for publishers: some might hit the jackpot with niche ideas while others might flop without much effort put into development.
On the other hand, there are studios like Blood Pact Studios and the creators of Boba Cafe Simulator, Caikemi, who are genuinely putting their hearts into crafting engaging experiences. It’s clear there’s a demand for these quirky games, but it’s inevitable that the market will also be flooded with uninspired clones.
In other Steam news, the top games by revenue for the week of July 14-21 have been revealed. Highlights include Counter-Strike, Palworld, and the newly launched Halo: Campaign Evolved, which seems to have reignited interest among gamers.
As we look ahead, it’s safe to say the retail sim craze isn’t slowing down anytime soon, and for gamers who enjoy these quirky titles, there’s plenty to dive into. Happy gaming!
