Shigeru Miyamoto Reflects on the NES and Its Impact on Gaming Culture

Nintendo’s legendary game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, recently shared his thoughts on the iconic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), also known as the Famicom in Japan. He revealed that when the NES was released back in 1983, it aimed to change the narrative that home consoles were merely children’s toys.

In an interview, Miyamoto explained how the idea for the Famicom emerged from Nintendo’s transition from arcade cabinets to home gaming systems. “At arcades, players can’t just keep throwing money into machines, so we thought if they had a console at home, they could enjoy the games as much as they wanted,” he mentioned.

Although the NES wasn’t the first console on the market, previous systems like the Magnavox Odyssey and Atari 2600 didn’t offer the same level of sophistication. Miyamoto reminisced about how, during that time, PCs like the NEC’s PC-6001 and the MSX were often viewed as superior to consoles, which were dismissed as mere toys.

He believes that the NES distinguished itself by demonstrating that it could deliver an arcade-like experience directly at home. “The Famicom bridged the gap between consoles and PCs. It was indeed a toy, but it was more than just a toy,” he said. “If we could bring arcade-quality games to it, then it transcended that toy label.”

Miyamoto also acknowledged that many fans now own multiple Nintendo consoles, expressing his hope that this becomes the standard. “That would be the best scenario,” he concluded.
