The Biggest Risk in Gaming? Playing It Too Safe!

The gaming world is at a crossroads, with budgets skyrocketing and competition fiercer than ever. The pressure is on for developers and publishers to ensure their games not only succeed but also dominate the market. As a result, many are opting for the safest options, like sequels to beloved franchises or remakes of classic titles. Xbox is a prime example, doubling down on its heavy hitters like Halo, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls to try and boost its fortunes. However, this strategy has come at a cost, including major layoffs and severing ties with several studios, leading to Xbox’s roughest quarter in years.

Interestingly, this cautious approach might actually be contributing to the industry’s current troubles. At the recent DevGAMM Madeira Games Summit, Rami Ismail, co-founder of Vlambeer and producer of Nuclear Throne, led a workgroup that explored the creative stagnation within the industry. The session, aptly titled “We’re moving fast and losing what made us good (creativity, craft & the future),” gathered industry veterans to discuss how to reintroduce creativity into game development and funding.

The consensus? The industry’s overwhelming fear of failure is ironically one of the biggest barriers to achieving success. Ismail pointed out that many companies tend to trim the edges of creative work to fit a mold, resulting in products that are bland and uninspired. He stressed that courage is crucial across the board—be it in funding, publishing, or marketing.

The group highlighted standout successes from recent years that thrived not because they followed market trends but because they were driven by the creators’ unique visions. Titles like Peak, Balatro, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are prime examples of how adhering to personal beliefs can lead to triumph.

One eye-opening takeaway from the discussion was that sometimes, breaking free from fear-driven development means making the tough call to end a project early. This approach can save time and money, preventing the chase of a flawed concept. Sony’s past attempts at implementing a live-service strategy serve as a cautionary tale, with many projects ultimately failing to deliver.

In summary, Ismail wrapped up the session by stating, “The industry’s fear of risk is currently the largest risk it faces.” There’s a kernel of truth here; often, the biggest hits come from the most unexpected places. A recent example is Meccha Chameleon, a multiplayer hide-and-seek game that raked in impressive revenue, only falling short of Fortnite in earnings this June. It’s a clear indication that innovation and boldness can lead to remarkable success in gaming.
