Project Zomboid Breaks Player Records with Major Update
What a week it’s been for fans of Project Zomboid! This beloved zombie survival game has once again proven its staying power by hitting a new peak for concurrent players on Steam. Even though the game is still in early access, it just rolled out a substantial update that has players buzzing.
This recent build, marked as 42.20, is the first major update since 2021 and comes with a slight bump in price. The Indie Stone, the developers behind this zombie adventure, have not only made the game more exciting but have also raised its price from $20 (approx. Rs 5,560) to $25 (approx. Rs 6,950). Despite this, a staggering 79,552 players logged in to explore the new features right after its launch!
So, what can players expect in this fresh update? The entire Knox County map has undergone a dramatic transformation. Seven towns received a complete makeover, each now sporting its own unique architectural style, fresh buildings, and better landscaping. Plus, the overall map size has doubled, bringing the total tile count to a massive 35,000.
Among the new and revamped locations, players can look forward to exploring a creepy orphanage, a completely new prison, and even a boy scout camp. And let’s not forget—there are now 400 procedural basements to discover! While some basements will be randomly generated, there are also 75 uniquely designed ones scattered throughout the map.
In addition to the map revamps, the 42.20 update enhances gameplay mechanics too. New animals like cows and chickens have been introduced, and the hunting and trapping systems have been updated, providing fresh farming opportunities. Stealth gameplay has also seen improvements, along with better fishing mechanics and the ability to drag corpses—because why not?
As fans eagerly dive into this major update, the developers are already looking ahead to future content. The next planned update is expected to bring back NPC survivors to Knox County, a feature many players have been eagerly awaiting. However, given the typical development timeline, it might still be a couple of years before we see that come to fruition.
