House of the Dragon: Helaena’s Dreams Hint at a Major Book Twist!
Hold onto your dragons, folks, because the latest episode of House of the Dragon Season 3 has just dropped a bombshell that could completely change how we see one of our favourite, albeit most tragic, characters: Helaena Targaryen. If you’re a book reader, get ready, because what we saw might be a huge deviation from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood!
Before we dive deep into the fiery prophecies, a quick heads-up: major spoilers for both the show and the books are ahead! You’ve been warned!
Helaena, played brilliantly by Phia Saban, has always been known for her enigmatic “Dreamer” abilities, often spouting cryptic warnings that only make sense after disaster strikes. This season, she’s been foreseeing bits and pieces, including her brother Aemond’s ultimate end. But Episode 7 truly cranked up her prophetic powers, giving us a series of dreams that seem to directly foretell her *own* future – and potentially, her death.
The episode kicked off with Helaena envisioning a serene scene: herself in the courtyard, approaching a white horse hitched to a wagon. A gentle breeze, soft light, and then, gates opening to glorious sunshine – a clear glimpse of freedom. But alas, this dream of peace is shattered by Rhaenyra’s voice, jolting her awake. We learn that Aemond had asked her to ride Dreamfyre into battle, which she refused, stating that while she once dreamt of flying, being with Dreamfyre now feels “too much.” She fears the dragon will “alter” her, much like she observes Rhaenyra has been changed by her own beasts. It’s clear Helaena, like her father Viserys, isn’t as captivated by the raw power of dragons as other Targaryens.
Rhaenyra, ever the pragmatist (or perhaps, desperate), then presses Helaena aggressively, almost treating her like a fortune-telling machine, demanding to know if she will win the war. This scene really highlights Helaena’s vulnerability and her unwilling role in the grand scheme of things.
Later, her dreams take an even darker turn. She dreams of giving birth, only for the newborn to be whisked away before she can even hold it – a truly heartbreaking vision. Is the child taken to be killed, or held captive as a threat to Rhaenyra’s reign? The show keeps us guessing. The dream then shifts dramatically: Helaena is in her dragon rider gear, astride Dreamfyre inside the Dragonpit, as an enraged mob storms towards them. With a powerful cry of “Dracarys!” Dreamfyre unleashes fire upon the charging crowd.
The final part of her dream is a bittersweet one. We see her living on a peaceful farm, the same white horse from her opening dream grazing nearby, and her two slightly older children helping her feed chickens. This echoes her earlier wish to Alicent about wanting chickens if she were ever free of King’s Landing. But this idyllic scene is quickly shattered as the sun is eclipsed by the moon, ash or snow begins to fall, and a cloud of debris engulfs her.
These powerful dream sequences strongly suggest Helaena is foreseeing her own demise. Throughout the series, she’s yearned for freedom, first from her mother Alicent’s influence, and now from being Rhaenyra’s hostage. She’s essentially been a captive her whole life. While the farm dream shows her desire for a simple, quiet life, the darkness of the Dance of the Dragons seems inescapable for her.
The most shocking part of this dream sequence is that middle portion where a militant Helaena rides Dreamfyre, defending the Dragonpit. This is a massive departure from the shy, gentle Helaena we’ve known. It directly depicts “The Storming of the Dragonpit,” one of the most pivotal and brutal events from Fire & Blood. For those who haven’t read the books, here’s what happens:
In the books, when King’s Landing descends into chaos and the populace rebels against Rhaenyra, thousands of citizens, incited by a religious figure known as The Shepherd, storm the Dragonpit with one goal: to slaughter every dragon within. The dragons, chained and at a disadvantage, still put up a ferocious fight, incinerating countless attackers. However, the sheer numbers and relentless fury of the mob eventually lead to every dragon’s death. Dreamfyre is the last to fall, fighting valiantly, breaking free enough to soar into the domed ceiling of the Dragonpit, ultimately bringing the entire structure down upon herself and the remaining attackers.
Now, here’s the kicker and where the show seems to be diverging significantly: In Fire & Blood, Helaena dies *before* the Storming of the Dragonpit. Her death is shrouded in mystery, with accounts suggesting she leapt to her death from Maegor’s Holdfast, impaled on spikes, devastated by the murder of her son Maelor (a character not present in the show, though perhaps the baby she’s pregnant with in Season 3). Other rumors claim Rhaenyra ordered her murder, further fueling public rage.
The debris cloud at the end of Helaena’s dream almost certainly represents the collapse of the Dragonpit. But if she’s riding Dreamfyre during that event, it means her fate is drastically different from the books. Instead of a mysterious suicide or murder before the Dragonpit falls, it seems House of the Dragon might be giving Helaena a warrior’s end, defending her dragon and the Dragonpit itself. This would mean she finally embraces the violent side of her Targaryen heritage, a tragic twist for such a gentle soul, but perhaps a more active and impactful one than simply not getting to live out her days feeding chickens.
