Toby Longworth’s Favorite Warhammer Character Revealed: Gaunt Takes the Crown!

Toby Longworth is a legendary figure in the realm of Warhammer 40k voice acting. He’s been the voice behind numerous Black Library novels, especially the enthralling works of Dan Abnett, who is often hailed as the best writer in the 40k universe. Longworth’s narration has brought to life iconic series like Eisenhorn and Gaunt’s Ghosts, along with various tales from the Horus Heresy, including the renowned character Nathaniel Garro, who transitions from a member of the Death Guard to a Grey Knight.

Currently, Longworth is lending his vocal talents to the upcoming Dawn of War 4, where he voices multiple Space Marines. We recently had the chance to catch up with him while he was painting miniatures and chatting about his extensive career in voice acting. With so many hours spent listening to his captivating narration, I couldn’t resist asking him: who’s his all-time favorite character to portray?

<p"Garro has always held a special place in my heart, especially in the early days of my career," Longworth shared. "His voice has a unique quality that makes it flow beautifully. But I also had a blast with Eisenhorn. Then there's Gaunt, who has an incredibly long and rich story arc. I can’t say exactly how many books there are, but it’s definitely a significant number!"

“The chance to follow a character’s journey over so many stories is what makes it truly enjoyable for me,” he continued. “So, if I had to pick one, I’d lean towards Gaunt, simply because he’s given me so many opportunities to really nail the performance.”

If you’re diving into the Warhammer 40k universe and looking for some great reads, the Gaunt’s Ghosts series is an excellent starting point. Picture it as the Warhammer equivalent of Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe novels, following an Imperial Guard Commissar who leads the famed Tanith First and Only regiment. Personally, I’d recommend starting with “Necropolis.” With 15 books in the series, there’s plenty to explore, and as a fan who’s read them all (and the Sharpe series too), I can vouch for their quality!

Honestly, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the first Warhammer 40k TV show being developed by Henry Cavill will showcase Gaunt’s Ghosts instead of Eisenhorn, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
