Trent Reznor Reflects on the Impact of Doom and Quake at QuakeCon
The excitement was palpable as QuakeCon kicked off today, throwing gamers back into the nostalgia of the classic shooter, Quake, as it celebrates its 30th birthday. Notable figures like John Romero and id studio’s co-director Marty Stratton took the stage to commemorate this milestone, and they had a big surprise up their sleeves: a brand-new 19-level episode of Quake was unveiled and made available right then and there!
To add a cherry on top, the iconic Trent Reznor, the genius behind Quake’s original soundtrack, made a brief appearance via livestream, stirring up a wave of nostalgia. Back in the 90s, Reznor’s industrial sound was a game-changer for video game music, perfectly matching the dark and gritty aesthetic of Quake, especially when compared to the thrash metal vibes of Doom. Many gamers have fond (or nerve-wracking) memories of having to mute the music during gameplay due to its intensity.
Reznor recounted his first experience with Wolfenstein, describing it as revolutionary. “It was unlike anything I had encountered before in gaming. I ended up buying a PC just to play it,” he shared. But it was Doom that truly left a mark on him. “When Doom hit the scene, it felt like an explosion. The technology was groundbreaking, and the freedom it offered was exhilarating. It was as if there were no adults involved, and that sense of liberation resonated with me,” he explained, drawing connections between his musical experimentation and the groundbreaking nature of these games.
He fondly remembered how he crossed paths with the team at id Software, forming friendships that would allow him to contribute to the Quake project. “I’m incredibly proud of the work I did on Quake, and I still think it stands strong today,” he said, emphasizing his connection to the game and its music.
As part of the 30th anniversary festivities, a range of exclusive Nine Inch Nails-themed Quake merchandise has been launched, including a quirky ammo box, t-shirts, keychains, hoodies, and even a vinyl reissue of the original soundtrack. While the prices might make your wallet cringe, the nostalgia and collector’s appeal are hard to resist!
