The Pressure is On: Lies of P Developers Gear Up for a Sequel
When it comes to following up a hit game, the pressure is always on, and that’s exactly what the team at Nough Studio is feeling as they dive into the sequel for their acclaimed action RPG, Lies of P. After picking up multiple awards in 2023, the developers are now tasked with the challenge of crafting an even better experience for players.
Kwon Byungsoo, the narrative director, shared his thoughts in a recent video, reflecting on those award ceremonies that once seemed like a distant dream. “Back then, I thought, ‘I wish I could stand there someday.’ Now, it’s about how we can top what we’ve already done,” he said. The stakes are high, but the team is committed to pushing their creative limits.
Byungsoo recalls the early days of development, starting from scratch and constantly asking themselves how far they could push the envelope. “Now, Lies of P serves as our foundation. The real question is how much more we can innovate from here,” he explained.
As someone who has dabbled in the Soulslike genre, I also sought input from my colleagues who are die-hard fans of FromSoftware games. When I asked them to rate Lies of P among other Soulslikes, they unanimously declared it the best game not made by FromSoftware. This certainly raises the bar, especially with other notable titles like Black Myth Wukong and Nioh 3 on the horizon.
Art lead Cha Byungjun acknowledged the mounting pressure, but emphasized the importance of recapturing the mindset that brought them success with Lies of P. “We’re trying to hold onto that original excitement while focusing on the next project,” he noted.
Director Choi Juwon echoed this sentiment, highlighting the palpable excitement within the team. “Everyone is deeply engaged in brainstorming how we can improve even further. There’s a shared sense of determination to elevate our work,” he remarked.
