Doom’s Daddy Gets Hooked Again: John Carmack Revisits His Classic Masterpiece!

Ever wonder what it’s like for a legendary game developer to revisit their own creation decades later? Well, we just got a fantastic glimpse into that very scenario, straight from the godfather of FPS games himself, John Carmack!

At the recent QuakeCon gathering in Gaylord, Texas, where many of id Software’s original crew reunited for a retrospective, Carmack decided to take a trip down memory lane. He fired up the Evercade port of the original Doom, and as he shared, it wasn’t long before he was completely engrossed.

In a post, the iconic programmer confessed that he quickly found himself on Level Four, only to realize he’d completely forgotten the keycard locations! He spent a good 15 minutes each on Level Four and Level Five trying to navigate the demon-infested corridors. His takeaway? A resounding, “Still a great game after all these years!”

Now, for those of us who know our Doom par times, 15 minutes per level might sound a little… relaxed for the game’s co-creator! The typical par times for E1M4 and E1M5 are around 1:30 and 2:45 respectively. But hey, it just goes to show that even the legends can get lost in the magic they created. It’s a testament to Doom’s intricate level design that it can still challenge its own architect.

It’s always fascinating to see how developers interact with their own masterpieces years later. While Carmack clearly still enjoys getting “Knee Deep in the Dead,” his fellow id co-founder, John Romero, continues to actively engage with Doom, creating new expansions like Sigil and even exploring unique community-made content like MyHouse.wad.

Contrastingly, some developers prefer to leave their old works in the past. Swen Vincke, the boss at Larian Studios (known for Baldur’s Gate 3), once admitted he hasn’t revisited Ultima 7, a game that heavily inspired him. He fears it might not live up to his cherished childhood memories. But for Carmack, it seems Doom stands the test of time, proving its enduring appeal.

For us gamers in Pakistan and worldwide, Carmack’s recent dive into Doom just reinforces what we’ve always known: some games are simply timeless. The original Doom continues to be a benchmark for FPS titles and a true classic that can still deliver an adrenaline rush, even if you’re the one who coded it!
