Unboxing the Future: Asus ROG XReal R1 XR Glasses Reviewed

Are XR glasses the ultimate game-changer in gaming accessories? With the growing popularity of handheld gaming PCs, these futuristic glasses seem to be a smart way to enjoy titles on a larger screen while on the move. Asus has partnered with XReal to introduce a pair of gaming glasses, the ROG XReal R1, which promise to enhance your gaming experience, especially when connected to devices like the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X.

When plugged into a handheld device, the ROG XReal R1 offers an impressive display with vibrant visuals and some stylish RGB lighting. However, all this innovation comes at a hefty price tag of $849 (approx. Rs 236,020), which partly covers the dock that enables connectivity for multiple devices via HDMI and DisplayPort. But is the dock worth the extra cost? Let’s dive deeper.

Design and Features

So far, XR glasses have not been known for their good looks, and unfortunately, the ROG XReal R1 is no exception. Thanks to the necessary components like displays and mirrors, the design tends to be bulky and far from sleek. The glasses have a notable thickness due to the display housing, but the angular design gives it a slightly appealing edge compared to other models, like the Viture Beast.

The camera for head tracking is discreetly integrated, making it less obtrusive than many competitors. The front face is a solid piece of dark plastic, with a section dedicated to the 3DoF sensor, which remains hidden until you realize it’s there. While some XR glasses aspire to be more professional, the ROG XReal R1 embraces its gaming roots with RGB lighting zones on the temples, cycling through a colorful rainbow display by default.

Controlling the glasses is possible via buttons located on the left temple. A button allows you to center your view or access settings with a double tap. The volume control is also cleverly designed, enabling you to adjust settings for tint and screen size, alongside the volume itself. The built-in speakers are decent, providing enough sound for gaming, but for a truly immersive experience, headphones might be a better choice.

Now, let’s talk about the dock. It resembles a classic ROG accessory—a geometric plastic piece with sharp lines but lacks any RGB lighting, which is surprising. It features two triangular buttons and a control stick, allowing for power control and a refresh rate boost from 120Hz to a dizzying 240Hz. However, the latter causes some issues with blurry visuals, particularly when reading text—definitely a downside.

Performance and Gaming

On its own, the ROG XReal R1 offers a 1080p display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Asus claims it reaches brightness levels up to 700 nits and covers 106% of the sRGB color gamut. While I can’t measure that directly, the colors do pop, even if they appear slightly washed out sometimes—perhaps due to being stuck on a less-than-ideal visual profile.

When connected to handhelds like the Xbox Ally X, the glasses shine, providing a solid viewing experience. However, pushing the display size too large can reveal the limitations of a 1080p resolution, resulting in a pixelated look. The best experience is achieved in follow mode, where the display stays compact enough for clarity.

One standout feature is the Instant 3D mode, which adds depth to games. It works better when the glasses are directly plugged into handheld devices instead of through the dock. While it’s not perfect, it does provide a unique experience without the immediate discomfort some may feel with traditional 3D displays.

Ultimately, while the dock’s capability of connecting to a gaming PC or console is a cool feature, it doesn’t entirely justify the steep price difference compared to other options on the market. The ROG XReal R1 offers some promising features, but it’s crucial to consider if the additional cost is worth it for your gaming style.
