Director Cuts Down on Nudity for New Rom-Com: A Shift in Audience Comfort
Director Will Gluck, known for hits like “Easy A” and “Anyone But You,” recently shared some insights about his upcoming romantic comedy, “One Night Only.” It turns out he had to make some significant cuts to the film, particularly when it came to nudity, due to changing audience attitudes, especially among younger viewers.
In a chat with Variety, Gluck expressed that he had come across research indicating that Gen Z and Gen Alpha are less receptive to explicit content on screen. This revelation played a key role in how he approached the film’s content. “Absolutely, I’ve seen it firsthand,” he explained. “I have extensive data showing that audiences are shifting away from nudity in cinema. It’s not just about these younger generations; it reflects a broader societal change. Nowadays, nudity has become something we keep more private, almost like it’s been relegated to phones rather than shared experiences in theaters.”
As a result, Gluck decided to trim down “so much nudity” after conducting test screenings of “One Night Only.” “I removed a lot,” he admitted. “We filmed a considerable amount of nudity in various locations, believing it added authenticity to the story. But as we presented the film to audiences, it became clear that such scenes pulled them out of the experience. People would be engrossed in the plot and suddenly be faced with an explicit scene, which visibly made them uncomfortable. The drawbacks of including such content simply outweighed the benefits, so we kept refining the film until we found the right balance.”
“One Night Only” features Monica Barbaro, known for her role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” alongside Callum Turner. Set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City, the rom-com introduces a quirky scenario where premarital sex is strictly prohibited except for a single 12-hour window each year. It’s a unique twist that promises to keep viewers entertained while navigating the modern landscape of romance and relationships.
