Exploring the Aussie Charm of Big Walk: A Fresh Take on Co-Op Gaming

Big Walk is making waves in the gaming community as a co-op adventure that’s all about chilling with your mates and solving some fun puzzles. With the rise of games that focus on group play, the term “friendslop” has surfaced, and it seems Big Walk is getting pulled into that trend. But does it truly deserve that label? Is it fair to categorize games in such a way?

Nico Disseldorp from House House, the studio behind Big Walk, shared his thoughts during a recent Reddit AMA. He appreciates having a term that helps gamers find titles perfect for group play, emphasizing that the friendships are what really matter in these experiences. However, he admits the term “slop” isn’t the most appealing choice, mainly because it carries some negative connotations. “I’d prefer it if the second word wasn’t ‘slop’ because it has a lot of baggage,” he mentioned, reflecting on how artists often cringe at genre labels.

Beyond the terminology, the team at House House also discussed the real-world beauty that inspired the design of Big Walk. Australia is home to numerous game studios, yet many don’t set their games in their own backyard. While Big Walk isn’t exclusively set in Australia, its environment clearly echoes the stunning Australian bush. The game captures the essence of dry, muted greens and features plenty of gum trees, making it feel like a genuine slice of Aussie life—so much so that you can almost smell the eucalyptus from your screen.

Jake Strasser from House House revealed that the game’s world draws directly from Wilsons Promontory National Park in Victoria. “The game world is based on the Prom,” he shared, explaining how the flora, iconic granite formations, and even the island’s topography were modeled after this real location. To nail the details, the team utilized a LIDAR heightmap of the park and made frequent trips for inspiration, texture photos, and to capture the atmosphere.

In reviews, Big Walk has been celebrated for its charm, with some critics avoiding the “friendslop” label altogether. One reviewer described it as “a joyous jaunt through a gentle world full of thoughtfully-designed puzzles,” highlighting the care that went into crafting this delightful gaming experience.

As Big Walk prepares to welcome players, it’s clear that it’s more than just a co-op game; it’s a heartfelt tribute to both friendship and the stunning landscapes of Australia.
